After several years being treated in NYC by a team made up of an oncologist, neurologist, and surgeon I moved to Sarasota Florida. As I set about finding doctors in the region, I continued to see my NY doctors. Upon my scans, reports, tests, all files being transferred, I went to the Fl doctor for the first time in April. They did my scheduled scan, took blood tests etc and prescribed my medication, one of which is a pain medication called MSIR.  I went to get it filled at my local Walgreens and they were out of stock. I asked if they could order it, and would it be in within 3 days to which I was told no to both questions. I was shocked and bewildered. I was not aware of Walgreens issues with the DEA, so I went to other Walgreens in the area. Upon providing my rx at each store they asked why I was not going to the Walgreens closest to my home, and informed me they would not be able to help. This may be common for people in Fl, but to others from the rest of the country being unable to get an rx filled and not having the pharmacist willing to order the prscribed med for you is unheard of.  After several visits I began to feel as if I were being mistreated because I was looking to fill an rx for pain medication. I did not ask to get cancer, nor I am ashamed of it. Angry yes, but not ashamed. I was feeling embarassed by having to go to so many pharmacies, being turned away because of the med on my rx, and even being told by one Walgreen pharmacist I should try Tylenol to alleviate the pain. Anyone with any advanced stage (stage 3)of cancer knows the many things we try to extend our life and the quality of that life. Things as unusual to me as shamans, healing groups, strange homeopathic herbs, acupuncture, etc.. One of the last things we need is to travel many many miles trying to fill our rx and being told we should try tylenol by a pharmacist.

As my current med was about to run out (I did not know how long it would take to fill an rx) I found a Wallmart that would fill 1/3 of the written amount on the rx, cancelling the remainder. I was concerned about stopping the meds abruptly so I said ok. This is wrong.  The treatment of people in pain is wrong. I am living here now only for six months and it is true I do not know how bad the problem may be in FL regarding abuse of meds, but what about people with legitimate needs. I want to spend as much time with my children and wife as I can, feeling as normal as I can, while I can.  Something really "should" be done. With the ageing community in Fl I do not imagine my struggle with cancer is a very unique circumstance. I am sad, depressed, angry and confused about what I am supposed to do as an ill adult in Florida wanting to live the hopefully many years I have left with as little effects of cancer as possible. Please, help.
