Its no breaking story when someone mentions a bad experience with Wells Fargo. In fact I'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesnt have some type of problem with them.

Nevertheless, this feeling of helplessness against an apathetic giant upsets me worse than if they outright attacked me. In fact, this feeling frustration is exactly whatmade America rise up to become America in the first place. In a sense, this is my midnight ride to whisper my fellow americans "the regulars are coming".

I have been banking with Wells Fargo for about 10 years. In 2009 I closed all my accounts except one (it would have taken a little while to close), due to the false words from a Wells Fargo Rep that ended up costing me money. Over time I my flames for Wells died down and I forgot how much they frustrated me. Until Today.. [continued below]....

I still dont use Wells fargo as my primary bank but opened a checking again about 2 years ago and use it very little. Recently due to the holiday season I started making purchases from Ebay using Paypal linked to my Wells Fargo account.

About a month ago I recieved an overdraft fee but didnt have the time to call in about it so I just overlooked it and didnt think about it until today. Two days ago (Dec 2) I made 5 purchases

2 for 25$ 1 for $18 and 2 for $0.99.

The next day (dec 3) I recieved 4 overdraft fees and another today, $35 each. I wouldn't have even called Wells Fargo to complain if they hadnt specifically told me that because I opted out of overdraft the only time I could ever recieve an overdraft fee is on reccurring charges.

I also confimed this on their website.

and here

I still wasnt upset. I assumed I would call them, they would be cordial, understanding and would probably give me credit for 3 out of the 5 fees, and from there on out I would just stop using my Wells Fargo card.

Not what happened at all. Charles Rep#u271378, the first rep I spoke with, wasn't mean by any long shot but despite me being nice and showing I've never received credit for an overdraft before, was apathetic and wouldn't give me any credit towards my account. He claimed that there was no such thing as not recieving overdraft fees, if you charge something onto your card you will always recieve a fee. He apparently wasn't aware of the opt out overdraft option.

At this point I actually am getting upset. Not so much the $170 they charged me for overdrafting $70, but for the sheer lack of customer service. Once I was clear he wouldn't budge I asked to speak with his manager. I dont remember her name but she was very cold from the start. The first thing I did was point out the two links provided above and how both say I shouldnt recieve overdraft fees from single purchases. it was as if she was prepered for me to say this becasue as soon as I did before I was finished she interrupted me to say that this is not true on Paypal purchases. When I said I wanted to close my account, in the tone of a snotty child she states that I cant due to a pending transaction. I told her that the only transaction is the $200 cash I just gave them to pay my overdraft fees. With a twinkle in her voice to insinuate she has "won" the discussion, she states that the cash I deposited is a pending transaction and it clearly states this in the rules of our agreement.

Also note that they charged me my fifth overdraft fee today (theyre only allowed 4 a day). Today before closing hours I paid all of my overdraft fees. Yet this directly contradicts What they say in their overdraft portion of website..

"There is no fee if your account is overdrawn during the day and you make a sufficient deposit or transfer before the posted cut off time on the same business day. Deposits are subject to our funds availability policy."

(I didnt bold the text they did)

I would like to finish by noting that I was more that understanding and willing to work with Wells Fargo. It wasn't the charges that upset me but their lack of concern and unwillingness to negotiate. Im sure if I read through one of their books on overdraft protection it would say the PayPal issue somewhere. But I shouoldnt have to. Im not a Banker this is why I purchase their services. I felt secure in the knowledge I gained from 2 pages on their website and 2 in branch reps to assume that I would not be charged overdraft fees becasue I "opted out of overdraft fees". However, the fifth charge is a blantent lie. But what difference does it make if they lie if there is no onoe to hold them accountable.

Flawed Excuses

AUTHOR: coast - ()

You are misinterpreting a four-year-old press release as a statement of current policy. The press release is superseded by the overdraft policy that is outlined in the documentation you received when you opened your checking account. You don't like the current overdraft policy so you continue to evade the fact that you are guilty of failing to properly maintain your checking account.

I actually dont want to spend any of their  money. This is why I opted out of overdraft fees in the first place. I have no intention of "playing the victim". I dont need do, Im not a victim. Im very fortunate in this fact. If you noticed I spoke with 2 people at different offices and looked around on their website about overdraft fees. I was still enrolled in no overdraft fees. As I wrote before though, I was upset over their complete lack of customer service. It sounded like she was reading from a script or possibly was prerecorded.

On their little chart all they had to do was put next to      125-Declined "only on card purchases". and maybe on of the two reps could have told me this as well. You mention business. I am a business owner and when I tell a customer he wont be charged for something I will not charge him, if there are fine lines to read I will inform him.

I agree many people play the victim not just with big banks but with a lot of things, however on the other side more people look the other way. This is what bankrupted America.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing"

I believe in capitolism and the free market. I am not opposed to big business, this is why socialsm doesnt work. because the interaction of the government keeps businesses with bad practices alive. They overspend and mismanage money, they are misleading and have horrible customer service yet when they overdrafted the American people paid their ODF.

In response to your end comment attacking my character, I assure you I am not a child. I am financially responsible and believe in fiscal responisibity. This is one of the problems I have with Wells once again. This is why I move out of Wells years ago and used a credit union. this is why I paid cash for my house. This is why I have only one credit card which I only use for gas. I am not the type to spend money I dont have. I am not nor do I feel or want to be a victim.

Yes that is my point. I was not informed of the electronic fund thing. Yes I dont see the re-occuring statement anywhere on the pages but this is what they all told me including th manager I spoke with yesterday. However, you have a good point, they have told me other things that werent true. It doesnt really matter to me, I assumed it was true so I kept re-occuring charges in my main account.

If you read a little further it says

"In addition, Wells Fargo and Wachovia customers will be able to opt out of overdraft coverage, meaning customers can specify that they don’t want their transactions authorized into overdraft if funds aren’t available to cover the transaction."

Its says their account, not their debit card.

The "False Product Claims" was the opt out of overdraft fee part that you didnt see yet.

really now...

First it really sounds like youre mad BECAUSE they DID NOT give you back 3 of the 5 overdraft fees. In your own words you state you made an initial purchase and recieved a overdraft fee, then made 5 more purchases. Exactly how long did you think THEY were going to allow you to spend THEIR money? You have an account but NOTHING in it. Then when they dont reverse the ODF you get all butthurt.

I can understand your frustration but this is a problem OF YOUR DOING!!! You do realize that you normally have to "opt out" of ODF every year. Specifically every fiscal year. Two years ago you opted out but a new year rolls around and then you did not opt out.

You can be mad all you like but the financial responsability rested with you. YOU needed to keep better records. You overspent and then assumed they would be nice and give you back money. Business is not about "nice" its about business. Which is pretty cut and dry. You DID NOT have the funds available and continued to shop. This means at that point you were spending THEIR money as your available amount would have been in the negative. This means that you must pay for each and every transaction with a ODF. I fail to see what your problem is OTHER then they didnt "Play nice" with you.

Its business and Im sure that even in your own job there are things you have to do that you dont like to. As for the customer service angle. Hey, if you were a minimum wage employee who had to listen to crybabys all day because they want a FAVOR so they do not have to pay, how do you think YOU would feel? I actually feel sorry for the person you had to talk with. They are the ones that have to listen to your SOB story. Even the best SOB story wont opt you out of paying what you owe. So either take better care of your finances or just use cash. The internet MAY be cheaper but then you run into incidients like this. so your $70.00 purchase costs you a total of $240.00. Not much in the way of ANY savings at that point.

Wells Fargo and other banking institutions tend to get a bad rap because consumers like this one will ALWAYS play the victim. It has become so common place anymore that even CS supervisors dont buy it anymore. THEY ALWAYS PLAY THE VICTIM!!!!! WHY?? You might ask. Because like children they REFUSE to accept the responsability of being an adult.

You flushed $170

AUTHOR: coast - ()

“I opted out of overdraft the only time I could ever recieve an overdraft fee is on reccurring charges”

You can opt out of overdrafts that are a result of debit card transactions, but that does not include checks or electronic funds transfers. The web pages you provided links to make no mention of your claim concerning recurring charges.

The website at the first link you provided states, “Wells Fargo will eliminate overdraft fees for customers when they overdraw their accounts by $5 or less and will charge no more than four overdraft fees per day.”

Your overdraft was in the amount of $70. That is beyond the $5 leeway. You were not charged more than four overdraft fees in a single day.

The website at the second link you provided recommends that you maintain an accurate record of all transactions. Apparently you have elected to ignore that recommendation. The web page also provides information that should clarify your confusion concerning their Debit Card Overdraft Service.

“Today before closing hours I paid all of my overdraft fees”

Evidently your deposit transaction was after the daily cut-off time. Your deposit will post the following business day.

Nothing in your report supports your claim of, “False Product Claims”
