I was on the official United Airlines site trying to book a ticket. I was able to choose flights and select seats, but after that the site kept stalling out and I couldn't get any farther. Called official United Airlines number and received a message that their call volume was unusually high, please wait until you're within 72 hours of travel. Did not want to wait 6 weeks. Tried their chat service...it was backed up for at least an hour. In desperation Googled "United Airlines Phone Numbers" thinking I could find an alternate phone. (Foolishly) called one that came up. A person with a very strong South Asian accent answered and I asked him if I had reached United Airlines. He hedged and said "Yes, I can help you with your travel". I was skeptical and asked him if he actually worked for United Airlines. He said he was with a "partner company" that could book tickets for UA as a "consolidator".
Long story short...yes, they can legitimately book tickets for United Airlines, but they charge a fee and are not up front about the fact that it's their service fee. He was not honest about the fact that they are really a travel agency that can book tickets for customers, but they are NOT United Airlines. This made me uncomfortable when I figured it out, and I asked him to cancel the booking. He became very argumentative. I was able to cancel the ticket myself through United Airlines, but the AirFareFees.com service fee had already been charged to my credit card. When I called the agent back to complain he strongly implied that those were the taxes and fees routinely imposed by the airline; but they're not, those legitimate fees were already included in the price of ticket they booked for me.
I hope that they will credit my Amex account for the approximately $400 they charged for "taxes and fees". If not I will dispute the charges.
It seems that they are, in fact, a travel agency. However, they posed as affiliates of United Airlines and were not honest when questioned. And I'm uncomfortable that now they have my credit card information and email address, etc., as they do not come off as professional and I'm not confident that they won't share my info.
