East Niles Community Services District - High Concentration Of Some Solvent In Drinking Water Dissolves Plastics Making Us Sick - Bakersfield California

As of today, Friday September 27, 2019 I determined that there is some form of solvent present in the tap water here that is aggressive enough and in sufficient concentration as to dissolve plastics in containers used to store the water.

We are served here by East Niles Community Services District for potable water.

Since getting here on 09/10/2019, I as I usually do, rely on a Seychelle jug/pitcher style water filter to make my water to drink and cook with. This filter removes 90% of Fluorine in one pass, as well as many other contaminants and I likely consume as much as one gallon of this water per day assuming I augment with soda, or juice or other bottled sources of fluids to consume.

A summary of the problem is that the Seychelle is not filtering some kind of solvent in the water, and when left to sit in the plastic pitcher, after more than an hour or so, it begins to dissolve the plastic. So in effect the solvent is there in the water, but not detectable by human means of smell or taste but over time reacts with the plastic taking the products of that back into the water and air giving it an odd smell and taste. It also fogs the pitcher up. It also has been making me sick.

Inspecting the filter, this one has the single large diameter screw on filter, as opposed to the new style that has one or two small diameter filters, I now find that the filter is loose. I had it on very tight. I remove it and see that the water has started to dissolve the gasket/O-ring and this has caused it to come loose, to leak, and the gasket is now sticky and left a cloudy slimy mess in that area. This is the water with solvent in it doing this.

Earlier this week I finally receive a Pur faucet filter that I typically use to make the first filter pass into the Seychelle. The Pur filters are less costly and reduce over 70 known contaminants some of which the Seychelle does not remove, and the Pur does not remove Fluorine and the Seychelle does at 90% per pass. I use the Pur to cross, reduce most of the non Fluorine contaminants, and to protect the Seychelle from harm and the want to not waste it out on the other things in the water.

I did not plan to use the Pur, but this morning, Friday September 27, 2019 I was able to determine what made the water taste funny in the pitcher, since it never has done this in the past. With that I decided to install the Pur and proved that this filter removes what ever solvent is there, and then the Seychelle removes the Fluorine that the Pur does not.

Water sitting in my pitcher all day long, over 8 hours now, does not fog the plastic, and does not have the smell and taste proving the Pur removed the solvent.
