I experienced mistreatment and was denied proper medical care by the doctors and nurses at the St. Francis Emergency Room, primarily due to a false statement made by the paramedics stating that I had walked in on my own. This unjust treatment felt deeply rooted in my age and race, and I felt compelled to voice my concerns to the doctor regarding possible racial bias. His dismissive response was, "You are out of here," which made it clear that my concerns were being ignored. In reality, I was unable to walk unassisted and had called for an ambulance myself because of my severe condition. The paramedic from Care Ambulance, located in Phenix City, provided a misleading account of my situation, asserting that I had walked into the ambulance.
Upon arrival at the emergency room on October 15, 2023, I was met with further abandonment when the staff mentioned that my insurance would not cover my treatment since they believed I had arrived on my own feet. However, the truth was that I could not leave my bed due to excruciating back pain. Despite my serious medical issues, the emergency room doctor informed me that X-rays would not be beneficial. At the same time, my blood sugar levels soared to 400, and as a diabetic, I was in a precarious state since I hadn't been able to eat or drink adequately. Unfortunately, the conduct of the nurses and one particular emergency room doctor was abusive; I recall him laughing and questioning why I wanted something to be wrong with me. To make matters worse, they called security on me, falsely claiming I was being checked out.
In a desperate attempt to seek help, I requested to speak with the house supervisor. They contemplated placing someone who could not walk in the waiting room, enhancing my anxiety about my situation. Fortunately, the supervisor managed to arrange for an ambulance to take me elsewhere while security escorted the paramedics to help me. It was alarming that, with a dangerously high blood sugar level of 400, I was not admitted to the hospital, as I faced blatant discrimination based on my age and race.
Additionally, I was subjected to further negligence when a nurse refused to cut the probe from my finger, resulting in a paramedic resorting to using his own pocket knife — a decision that caused two punctures and ultimately led to a serious staph infection. The following day, my condition deteriorated to the point where I had to call the paramedics again since I couldn’t eat or walk. They transported me to Piedmont Hospital, where the doctor finally acknowledged my dire situation after I struggled to respond to basic questions. He ordered X-rays, leading to the discovery of a MRSA infection in my spine, necessitating emergency surgery.
I narrowly avoided death due to the absolutely negligent care I received at St. Francis Hospital. Today, my health remains compromised, leaving me constantly fatigued. What is particularly disheartening is the lack of accountability from the Georgia Medical Board when it comes to addressing harmful actions by healthcare professionals that nearly cost me my life.
