In July 2008, I had foot surgery. My husband went online and found Allegra Medical and ordered a pair of crutches for me. I wasn't able to use them and waited for a return label which didn't come. I finally addressed the same box they came in with the company address that was on the invoice, and returned them via UPS.
After months of complaints to the company and replies that they hadn't received the box, I finally contacted UPS and asked them to do a trace on the package. They did. The box ended up at an individual's address in New York! He signed for the package.
This February, I wrote a letter to that individual telling him that my box mistakenly ended up at his address and I requested that he return it to Allegro, the address on the box. The reply he sent stated that he'd ordered the crutches and the box was meant for him. How could he get the box I labeled for Mesa if that's what the UPS trace found??
I recontacted the company and Allegro said there was no record of receiving or restocking my crutches. They would not credit the $52 back to me so I feel like I just threw the money away. Excuses all around.
Who is mostly at fault here; Allegro Medical or UPS?

Allegro's proceddure is 100% at fault

I own a shipping facility. There is only two possible ways that UPS could deliver that package to a completely different state. The first would be if the incorrect zipcode was provided to UPS. UPS typically resolves that problem when referencing also to the city, then street address. If a similar city and street exists in with the incorrect zipcode, UPS would correct it to that location. All carriers exept USPS use that protocol. With USPS (post office), the package is likely lost forever unless the recipient retuns to sender.
The other possibility is that Allegro received the shipment properly, then re-used the box top send the crutches to the next buyer. Allegro may have forgotten to remove or cover the old shipping label. When the label was scanned for delivery, the old barcode label may have been scanned with the Minnesota tracking #.
Regardless, if you take your tracking # and look it up yourself in the UPS website, you will be able to see what happened. In the seven years that I've operated this shipping facility, I have gotten calls most every week inquiring if a package was delivered to a company. Many time, the customer states that the company says they never received it. Without exception, the company has ALWAYS received the shipment, but did not log it in correctly in their receiving records. This does, of course, assume that the correct address was used.
