My husband received a call on his cell phone from a magazine company. I do not know how they got his number and he has never received a telemarketing call before. My husband works hard, but he does not deal with finances or know much about obvious scams. The telemarketer talked him into "buying" so many magazine subscriptions and he was supposed to get some gift card or shopping spree. He gave the guy his debit card number and when the guy was going over what he was getting into, he changed his mind.
He told the guy to cancel the order and he kept pressuring him to buy the magazines anyway. My husband has a short temper and simply hung up on him. The telemarketer kept trying to call him back throughout that day and my husband never answered. When my husband told me what had happened, I (first and foremost) told him that was stupid and to NEVER give out personal information over the phone no matter what they offer him.
Since then, this "business" has taken out 21.47 twice and 20.00 once over the past 3 weeks. My husband tried to call and explain that he cancelled the order and (of course) they have no record of the conversation and, furthermore, told him he could not cancel without paying 80 percent of the 30 installment payments and that he only had 3 days to cancel from when he "ordered" the subscriptions.
We have 5 small children and we live week-to-week. These scammers took advantage of us and my husband's naivety. He should have NEVER given out his debit card number, but he DID cancel and they processed it through anyway. There must be a way to stop these people. I am sure they have taken advantage of good and hard-working people from the young to the very old and have made other families suffer. What can be done to stop them? Why haven't they been stopped already? Who are these people? Can anyone help?
