It's worse than having regular DSL or dial-up. Atleast with DSL or dial-up the connection didn't die so often and the customer service was still located in the US (where they actually tried to troubleshoot). Here's my nightmare with this company:

Ever since 2013 started the U-verse internet connection that I have has died frequently and all of a sudden. Calling customer service is useless because you'll get transferred over to their Philippine call center and all they know how to do is “Send Tech” and nothing more. They could care less of what you tell them and don’t try to troubleshoot. When I did accept a tech to come over, he didn’t even bother to check lines outside and just said that the entire house’s phone lines need to be rewired. This is a 180 turn from what a tech said when one of them came out to check the lines a few years back. At that time, he actually tested the lines and determined that they were fine and it was from their end.

I recently found out that the routers that they give people are cheap and have a lot of defects that cause connection loss. But AT&T doesn’t want to do anything about it or admit to it. The internet is littered with people stories about this. The reason why this is happening, well, it could be done on purpose to buy a higher priced router or force people to Time Warner Cable (most corporations are sister companies nowadays) and have one internet company.

Food for thought: Back when AT&T had dial-up they had the habit of cutting off your connection even if you paid for unlimited, but atleast all you had to do was reboot and you were up and running. When they offered DSL their system would bump you off around midnight if you were on all day but again, all you had to was reboot. But sometimes this didn’t work and you had to call and complain. Once I was told nothing was wrong and that it must my computer, but two days later they admitted to having problems on their end. Second time I complained, they discovered that the speed on my account was switched to a lower speed and  they don’t know how that happened. The only way that could happen is if someone literally went into my account and lowered it on AT&T’s side.
