There is a consistent problem among companies advertising job opportunities in the online employment agencies, such as Monster.com and Indeed.com.
Almost every time I read a job opportunity, after I had already signed in with my Username and Password, I have to re-register in order to fill out the application online.
With the Baystate Noble Hospital in Westfield, Massachusetts, I was required to register on their web-site and then, after identifying myself with my name, address and telephone number(s), I was then required to download my resume. Once done, it goes into another page demanding I fill in the same information already provided in my resume.
This is a common practice among American companies; then, sometimes, all of my work may simply disappear. Very few companies, or Human Resource Managers, will show the decency of responding -- one way or the other. It is as if I were dropping my resume into a deep well.
Today, after this experience with the Baystate Noble Hospital, I called their Human Resource Manager to complain of this ignorant and thoughtless practice. After spending several minutes with their multi-level menu-driven answering system, I never got to the Human Resource Manager. So I left a message knowing full well she will probably not return my call, a common practice among managers in every industry.
I tried to explain to her this absurdity of their demanding a resume and then, after I will have downloaded it, asking me to repeat everything I had already put into the resume. I told her it takes much too much time -- on the average of one hour (sometimes more) and then I don't even get the decency of a respectful response.
There was another issue, too. I was trying to apply for their position as a Security Officer but was immediately annoyed by the demand for a 4-year college degree. Now, you must realize these positions typically pay just above the minimum wage or, in this instance, 11 dollars per hour. Someone with a 4-year college degree is not going to work for minimum wages, if he can help it. Nor is a degree truly necessary for this kind of work. Such a requirement is both pretentious and ignorant, clearly demonstrating an ignorant “elitists” attitude on the subject, a common attitude among managers hiring people to work in their offices. They seem to lack the knowledge, insight and certainly wisdom to realize a person doesn’t have to go to college to earn a degree to be competent or to do a particular job. He could be simply intelligent and self-taught. Besides, not every parent can afford to send their children to college. Some managers seem remarkably incompetent on this subject.
Also, I have spent eight years working as an armed security officer in several different communities and businesses. Six years ago, I successfully stopped a man from raping a 10 year old girl and have investigated drug traffickers, sex offenders, professional thieves and people who entertain sexual fantasies with little children. During that time, I have been in court many times testifying on behalf of the criminal prosecutor and have literally written dozens of incident reports. Though I didn’t go to school or college for it, I have written mathematically-intensive computer programs, configured computers and security and security video systems.
Yet, according to the way many companies and “Human Resource Managers” think and work, I would never qualify to work in these areas. They think that way because I don’t have a college degree. I am self-taught. And they cannot handle that! They are that stupid!
I have learned from extensive personal experience Human Resource Managers, or Personnel Managers, as they were called many years ago, are comprehensively incompetent in the proper treatment of people or the proper interpretation of their credentials, accomplishments or qualifications. They really have no clue to what they are doing in their responsibilities. They are pretending to know more than they do and lack the skills and tools to talk about it.
The Human Resource Management at the Baystate Noble Hospital is no different.
