I've been a loyal Best Buy customer for years (I actually started with a Circuit City account which was transfered to Best Buy). When I tried to make a purchase over the weekend, I was told that my account had been closed. When I called customer service to ask why, they said it was because I had too much credit card debt. Although I do have a number of accounts with high balances, I am never late on my payments and always pay much more than the required payment amount, including my Best Buy/Chase payments. However, I only use the Best Buy card for purchases qualifying for zero interest, and the fact is they're not getting any interest money from me (which I think contributed to their decision). I can understand if I'd missed a payment or had late payments, but the fact is I've completely honored my payment obligations. I told the service rep that I will NEVER buy from Best Buy again, and that's a fact. So be aware, it doesn't matter if you handle your account responsibly, they can still ditch you!

More idiotic "advice" from "mr rik"

First of all, the OP never indicated that the Best Buy / Chase account was paid off. Where did you get that from??
Second, a bank can close your credit card account whether it is paid off or not.
It makes no difference at all.

Could Have Been A Lot of Reasons....

But the one item they cited would be the greatest concern you should have because if they shut your credit off, so are a lot of other merchants going to eventually do so. 30%-35% of your FICO score is affected by the available credit you have and if you're carrying high balances (as you indicate), and a high debt to credit ratio, you're going to have this happen at a whole lot of places, no matter what your total credit limits are. The fact you make payments on time is good... because that also makes up 30%-35% of your total FICO score. They certainly didn't cut you off because you aren't paying them interest; if you d/c limit ratio was sufficiently low enough, they probably would have allowed the credit to go through.
Honoring your payment obligations isn't good enough anymore. Making more than the MMP isn't good enough anymore. Reduce your leverage sufficiently, and this picture will change. Best of luck to you.

Some GOOD advice

Ok. It looks like you had paid off your "best" buy card some time ago and this is why they were able to close it.
So something has probably changed with your credit situation. Or they're pissed because you weren't letting them rape you.
So what do you think is going to happen if you start paying off your other cards? Thats right, they might close them too, and then you will be left with NO credit cards.
You can pay on your other cards, but I wouldn't pay off any completely that you want to keep. Leave just a little on there to keep these bastards from closing it. Now they can still decrease your limit if they want to, but you will have a "bargaining chip" because you still have some of their money.
If they want to play dirty, default on them.
Good Luck!

You said " I was told that my account had been closed. When I called customer service to ask why, they said it was because I had too much credit card debt."
You should only be buying with cash. Then pay everything you can on the cards to get rid of them.
This is really important because if Best Buy cut off your credit. You will never get a non rip off car loan if your car dies and you need a new one.
Cut up the cards then make the min payment on all cards except the one with the smallest balance, pay it off. Take what you paid on that card and add it to the next low balance card etc..

House of Credit Cards

"I do have a NUMBER of ACCOUNTS with HIGH balances". One small problem and your "House of Cards is going to come tumbling down. It isn't responsible to HAVE a number of accounts with high balances. You probably ought to thank them AND start paying DOWN some of those high balance accounts.

Nothing Unusual

They apparently ran a credit profile on you and found your score had decreased due the high balances on the other accounts. As such, they felt you were a much higher credit risk.
You did say something very telling however: "Although I do have a number of accounts with high balances". Not a very good looking financial future!
