This story's just sad. I responded to an ad placed on craigslist by this company I was contacted by Emmanuel who asked me to come in for a interview the following day. He gave me instructions as to what stop to get off via the R train the man told me to take the train to 8th AVE I repeated the directions back to him and he confirmed that I had the directions down correctly.

I head out for my interview I take the train which I was instructed to take. I fell asleep on said train and rushed out at the 5th Ave stop, thinking that I was supposed to get off at that stop I called Emmanuel at this point in order to confirm the location of the store. He said to continue to take the R train in the same direction, and to get off at 8th Ave he told me this like three times.

Fine, I get back on the train but I begin to have my doubts when I see we're leaving Manhattan. I get off at 8th Ave as I was instructed I was kind of surprised that almost everyone at the train stop was Asian. A police officer was the only person who was kind enough to point out to me that the address that I was looking for could only be found in Manhattan and lent me his cell phone to call Emmanuel to find out if I was in the right place.

Emmanuel then informs me that I was supposed to get off at 8th street not 8th Ave. I really wanted to argue with the man that he had been the one to tell me to get off at this stop but who am I to argue with a prospective employer? Mind you I was supposed to be at this "interview" between 2 and 4. Thanks to E it was now 5:30.

I hop back on the train and get off at the correct stop mind you it was FREEZING on this day. I walk the 2 blocks to the store and I'm greeted by the man himself, he sits me down and seemed surprised that I had brought my resume with me (odd). He then went into details about the shift and what it was I was meant to do.

He asked me if I could work certain shifts and if I would be able to work weekends and I told him yes. Emmanuel scribbled a few things on my resume and then he told me that I should give him a call by Jan. 2nd I believe this interview took place on Dec 28th or 29th.

A few days pass and I call Emmanuel on the designated day He then told me that he went on vacation for a week so he didn't have time to get anything done. I found this to be a very odd occurance but paid it no mind. He told me to call him in a couple of days and we ended our conversation.

I called Emmanuel in a couple of days as he had instructed he picked up the phone and told me to call him in 20 mins. Ok....45 mins later I called him again there was no answer this time. I had a interview that day so I went as soon as I was done I called him again and he told me that he was sorry that he had already found someone to fill the position.

What the hell was the point of having me burn up my minutes calling you back to back if you knew from "hello my name is..." that you weren't going to hire me? Dont sit there and have me call you all day and you know you have no interest in employing me. A week goes buy and I'm doing my craigslist thing and I see the exact same ad so I dial them up and ask if they were hiring, the person told me that yes they were still hiring and that the position hadn't been filled yet.

I have a friend who dines there and she asked in person and was told the same thing. She asked me if I thought it was a racial thing and I said that I dont think I'd rule it out. I was the only African American in the store that day, or maybe he felt that I was too "ugly" to work there being that alot of places want "attractive" females working at there establishments.

All i have to say to people like Emmanuel is I hope you're happy, when someone you know gets robbed or their house gets broken into or their car gets stolen its because of people like you. People like you who turn decent people like me down for jobs and then their forced to turn to a life of crime in order to feed themselves or their families. Some people continue the job hunt others do worse keep that in mind.

Batman shut the hell up...smh

AUTHOR: MellyGeM - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Yes you're goddamned right I fell asleep on the way over there. I was up late the night prior and up early the next morning helping my Autistic son with his lessons. He's also VERY hyper active and I'm not like other parents I refuse to pump him full of dimetapp or theraflu just to get him to go to sleep. Like I said in my previous post I'm an adult and I handle my business on my own.

My son needs to review what he learns in Speech Therapy because I don't know about you but people tend to frown on a child who's four and is unable to speak. I don't ask anybody for sh*t, if I have to be up late with this kid helping him out then thats what I'm going to do.

Anything you've had to say was either sarcastic or just plain negative, maybe you need to get laid or get a hobby hell kill 2 birds with one stone and do both. You seem to be hung up on the fact that I fell asleep on the train like I said previously when I got off and called the man I WASN'T LATE.

Anywhoo, I know after I post this you're going to tell me that this is yet another excuse since according to you I'm a "excuse machine". I never knew that taking care of one's special needs child was an excuse...one has to wonder if you even know the meaning of the word.

You're right, now it's completely understandable that you would fall asleep on your way to a job interview... You had to stay awake for almost 2 whole hours!

You're little more than excuse machine...

Let's give a round of applause to Brownsong

AUTHOR: MellyGeM - (USA)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Thank you brownsong for seeing the 1st portion of what I was trying to say. As far as appearances I do believe that it plays a strong part in you getting offered a job. That day I showed up looking damned good, I had on my little three piece suit from H&M with some borrowed but highly presentable stilletos :)

My hair was up to par, my breath was minty! So I'm most certain that wasn't one of the reasons lol. I remember seeing in a previous post someone said something like " you couldn't stay awake fro a 10 min train ride" first off I don't remember telling anyone where I lived so how would you know if the place is 10 mins away or not?

Secondly since we're getting technical it's a 20 min walk to the bus stop, 30 min ride to the train station and an hour and a half train ride to the destination. So it doesnt take 10 mins to get from Queens to Manhattan  smart a*s this guy is obviously not a New Yorker. You can't even make it in 10 mins by car, you'd have to sprout wings and fly. But thank you again brownsong it's people like you that make the world go round :)

Had to tell this story

AUTHOR: brownsong - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, February 08, 2010

I don't understand why so many aren't getting it. It is obvious that the guy gave you the wrong directions and that is why you were late.

But anyway, I feel compelled to tell you what happened in my beauty shop one day last year. A Black woman came in and asked if their were any jobs. I am white, but race really had nothing to do with any of this, I am just telling you because race is a big part of this thread. Well, this woman was wearing stained, holy sweats and her unkempt hair was pulled back in a small pony tail at her neck. She wore no makeup and her baggy t shirt didn't match her pants. In other words, she didn't look like a hair dresser at all. She dragged a kid along too. Well a customer had recently told me that if I knew of anyone who needed a maid job to let him know because he needed one at the hotel nearby. So I kindly said to her "No, I have no positions open, but I know where they are hiring for maids" and she looks very shocked and insulted. She replied " I do hair. I was looking for a hair stylist job" I was mortified and embarrassed. But this goes to show that appearance does count alot towards first impressions. She should have worn better clothes, done her hair, put a bit of makeup on(after all, this is a beauty shop). I don't know what you look like, but it doesn't matter, as long as you are clean, your hair and makeup are done and you wear nice clothes and dab a little perfume on, even an ugly person isn't really ugly anymore. The main thing is to show that you take pride in your appearance.

Anyway, I am glad that you got a job. Good luck in the future.

Getting a job in customer service

AUTHOR: Inspector - (USA)

POSTED: Monday, February 08, 2010

It is mostly about appearance.

"Why would you tell a white person that your hiring and then 10 mins later a black person walks in and asks the same question and you tell him that your not hiring for another 2 months???"

I may tell someone that I am hiring but, then someone walks in and is dirty, smells, or just doesn't comb their hair, sometimes the clothes they wear are offensive, then I tell them the same thing "not hiring".  If I said "you smell bad" or "you're dirty" it would start conflict.  I would prefer to avoid conflict and therefore "I'm not hiring" or "I have already filled the position" is the easy way out.

Im so NOT playing the victim

AUTHOR: MellyGeM - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, February 07, 2010

First I'll apologize to Stacey b/c it wasn't her who made that comment that I mentioned there was some confusion between her and some other Female named Ashley I'll still post the link. In reference to the two previous posts like I've stated so many times I'm not out to screw up anyone's reputation just because I didn't get the job.

If I'm TRYING to play the victim Stacey then about six other people are doing the same thing according to the corporate office this is the sixth time someone has made this claim against this individual in the past month. This will be the SECOND time that the corporate office had to step in behind his questionable interviewing/hiring methods. I'm up here telling my story, and bringing what happened to other peoples attention that is all. You guys are trying to make it seem like oh here's this honest individual doing his job and then here I come the "bad guy" trying to make his life a living hell NO thats not the case.

As far as me getting a job I have one two actually, and I'm doing this in order to make sure that this guy gets what he deserves. If he was such a good guy employees wouldn't be telling the people at corporate that they've witnessed him ripping up peoples applications and resumes minutes after interviewing them. I will continue to defend myself because I know that I'm not doing anything wrong.

You guys can continue to jump on me if you want I know what i know.

Are You Serious???

AUTHOR: CromwellD - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, February 07, 2010

First of all, I did read the entire report and your explanation of said report, not once,  but twice.

Now, as a business owner, I will give you my feedback.  If I set up an interview with a potential employee, I expect you to be there on time, no matter what the circumstances are.  Since you found the phone number of your potential employer without having been at the location personally (otherwise you would have known the address as well), and you clearly state that you have internet/computer access (you specifically state that "[a] week goes buy and I'm doing my craigslist thing," it is your responsibility to find my (as a potential employer) location on time, regardless of whether I gave you general directions or not.  Let's face it, NYC is a large place.  I have lived here for 33 years (I moved here in my teens) and I still have difficulty from time to time when I am searching for some place that I have never been, whether I have precise directions or not.  It isn't too terribly inconceivable that Emmanuel may have accidentally said 8th Ave instead of 8th St and even confirmed it multiple times.  When I get on the subway, or even in my car, to go to some place that I have been to numerous times, I pay no attention to street names/stops any longer, because I know the route intrinsically.  This even happens to me when I am giving directions to people to get to my house.  Since I drive the route all the time and know it with my eyes closed, I have been known to give incorrect directions to my house.  Having said that, if I am going to a place that I have never been and it is important for me to be there on time, I ALWAYS obtain the physical address of the place that I am going and I use either Google Maps or MapQuest to obtain directions to the address.  Also, going to the company's website clearly reveals their address of their location and they even provide a map that reveals their general location (E 14th St and Broadway).  In your rebuttal, you state it was not your fault that you were late, but it was!  Whether or not Emmanuel gave you incorrect directions or not.  As the potential employee, it is your responsibility to arrive at the interview on time!  As others have stated, you are lucky he even interviewed you), as I would not have.

And per your rebuttal, of course Burger Creations is going to launch an investigation into this...  You came to Ripoff Report scream racism at the top of your lungs!  I would launch an "investigation" as well if you came to Ripoff Report screaming racism from my company at the top of your lungs as well.

The fact is, YOU and only YOU see the racism in this.  You even go out of your way to state that "almost everyone at the train stop was Asian" on 8th Ave.  This comment adds absolutely no viable information to your report, except the fact that you are playing the race card.  Who cares what 'race' (there is only ONE race, the human race) people are at a train stop?  It makes no difference.

In regards to Emmanuel asking you to call you back after the interview, employers often do this when they aren't interested in hiring you.  It is a polite way of saying no and often times employers do this in hopes that you will 'get the picture' and stop calling.  Also, remember that staffing in an establishment like this (a restaurant) can change at a moment's notice (I worked in many different restaurants as a chef prior to changing careers).  Therefore, just because they stated a job was filled on one day and posted an add on craigslist the next, doesn't mean they filled the position.  A new one simply opened up.  Another thing to keep in mind is that employees of an establishment don't always know what the staffing needs are at that particular moment.  Just because employee #1 stated that the position was still open doesn't mean that employee #2 won't say it is filled, as they simply don't know what position you are even referring to.

And the thing that gets me the most irritated (yes, even over you blatantly flying your race card) is the fact that you state this, "All i have to say to people like Emmanuel is I hope you're happy, when someone you know gets robbed or their house gets broken into or their car gets stolen its because of people like you. People like you who turn decent people like me down for jobs and then their forced to turn to a life of crime in order to feed themselves or their families. Some people continue the job hunt others do worse keep that in mind."  No one, and I repeat NO ONE else is responsible for the actions of another!  Let me say this again in a different way.  The ONLY person responsible for your actions is YOU!  If you turn to a life of crime because you didn't get this position, it is YOUR fault, not his!  YOUR FAULT!!!!!!!!!!!!  Are you implying in your very last sentence that he should hire everyone that interviews for the position?  Surely, another decent person (that probably wasn't late for their interview) was also turned down, and possibly even 10 or 15 other decent persons (who weren't late either) and possibly even 1 or 2 not so decent people got turned down as well.  That means we should blame Emmanuel for this if they all 'fly off the deep end' and steal a car?  ABSOLUTELY not!  There is a great line in the movie 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day" that goes something like this, 'there is no fate but what we make for ourselves.'  Stated another way, we are responsible for our own actions and we reap what we sew!

Facts of the case are: 1) You are the only one who contrives any racism out of this; 2) You are the only one responsible for being late to your interview, and thus, you are responsible for not being offered the position; and 3) If someone turns to a life of crime for no matter what reason, it is THEIR decision and NO ONE ELSE is responsible for that decision!

Anyone hungry for a burger?  Their menu looks great!

It will also show to them that there is no racism or discrimination.  Unfortunately because of people like you who seem to scream racism at the drop of a hat.  They may decide it is simpler to agree with you and (I hope not) pay you some settlement making you think you are right.  When it is really just to get you to go away.

As for the comment you are claiming that Stacey made.  Please post the link to that report for all to see.  Because if it was said at all you probably took it out of context.

POSTED: Saturday, February 06, 2010

Uh, you're shouting racism and discrimination at the top of your lungs, so of course they're going to investigate. Now, because of YOUR incompetence and general idiocy, this guy has to go through an investigation.

You don't care though, do you? Nope. You're too dumb to get that this whole d**n thing was your fault. You're a moron and this guy knew it so he didn't want to hire you. The only thing this guy is guilty of is not being skilled enough to tell you straight up that he doesn't need an employee that can't find the restaurant and can't manage to stay awake on a ten minute train ride.

Seriously. He tried to let you down easy because he didn't know any better and you can't wait to crucify him for it? I bet if told you that he didn't want to hire you because you've got the common sense of a plant, that you'd still be on here crying all the same.

You are the problem here, not the guy who didn't hire you. YOU. I don't even think it would be too far off to say that people like you are one of the fundamental problems with society today. Your shortcomings are your problem. Quit pushing them onto everyone else's plate. No wonder you're having so much trouble nailing a job washing dishes.

I didn't put this story up here to gain anybody's sympathy or cry about how I didn't get a job because I "made myself late". I wrote it shed light on to whats going on at that store. Obviously you did not read my update where I very clearly explained every aspect of what I've written in this report.

If all you can get out of it is "I came to this site to write this ridculous story" then later for you is all I can say. I probably would have doubted myself if everyone had the same reaction as you but no MANY people are in agreement that something funny is going on at that store.

Dont claim to be a  Equal Opportunity Employer when you know that you are not thats the reason why I wrote this report to expose them as frauds. Why would you tell a white person that your hiring and then 10 mins later a black person walks in and asks the same question and you tell him that your not hiring for another 2 months??? If i have a issue of intelligence then you're either illiterate or did not read the report

AUTHOR: MellyGeM - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, February 05, 2010

Please read the report before you pass judgment. Obviously you and these three other individuals must've just skimmed through it. I would NEVER blame my being tardy to an interview or anywhere else on someone else, come on im 24 yrs old if I'm late on the account of my own actions then I'll own up to it.

As I explained in my report the man told me to get off at a certain stop  (8th Ave )about four times. Counting the day he originally called me for the interview, and I repeated it to him and he confirmed that yes that is the stop I had to get off at. And yes I admit that I did fall asleep on the train and yes I did get off at the wrong stop but I called him and and told him that I was on my way and gotten off at the wrong stop.

He told me to CONTINUE in that direction and told me ONCE AGAIN to get off at that stop. At that point and time I wasn't late I wasn't late until Iwent  all the way to the stop that HE directed me to. So there for I was late due to his guess work, for example if you had to be at my house by 4pm ad i told you to exit the highway at 8th ave and you call me and say yea i got off at 8th ave so where do i go from here? and my response is pretty much OOPS!! I meant 8th st are you not going to be late now because of my miscommunication to you??

As far as my bringing my resume the man TOLD me to bring it. I didnt just bring it on a whim, and to my reference everyone being asian when I got off the train it was b/c I know that this particular neighborhood is NOT mainly asian, and there wasnt a single sign in english, obviously I was not in the correct part of town.

It wasnt till then the man told me that he meant to say 8th street! Also when I refer to the race card I've been on interviews at places that only hired hispanics, whites, indians or whatever have you. Different places use different practices so it's not a "card" to be played people actually do that, I dont know if you guys are from NYC but thats what goes down.

Thats what happened that day, I never said I would turn to a life of crime I said PEOPLE LIKE ME. There's a big difference also my friend who inquired about the opening was white the same day i sent my brother in there no less then 10 mins later and they told him that they weren't hiring for another 2 months please try to explain that??

Race Card Again?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 05, 2010

Serioiusly...

You ended up having to call them 3 times to find out where they were located.  You obviously have access to a computer.  It would be very simple to find out where they were located and look at the transit maps/schedules to figure out on your own how to get there.  Not only that you said you had a friend that goes there.  So here is a novel idea...why didn't you ask them how to get there.

Honestly I don't think there would be any employers who would hire you just based on that intitial impression that you had left with them.

With your case it got better.  You fell asleep on the train, which is 100% on YOU, got off on the wrong stop all together(5th vs 8th).  I don't even know why you called him then because the obvious thing would have been to get back on the subway and get off at the correct stop.  So eventually you show up after 5:30 instead of the 2-4pm, and want to argue with him that he made the mistake.  I would also bet that that attitude came through on the interview.

As for your Resume, it does not guarantee a job.  In fact it can hurt you more than it helps.  Especially if you show this same lack of professionalism on the Resume that you appear to show in just trying to get to the interview.

Also, during your trip you mentioned when you got off on one stop almost everyone was Asian.  What in the world does that have to do with anything.  The answer is NOTHING, other than showing that there may in fact be racisim..but with YOU.

Honestly the "we found someone else" is usually "code" for nothing more than you were not who they were looking for but they don't want to hurt your feelings.

You admitted you fell asleep on the train and screwed up - So you get to said appointment very late and are lucky you even got the interview

Where in this report does it say that the man is a racist?? You are the one who pointed out that the people at the station were Asian - what does that have to do with the report?

Not many people take a resume to restaurant interview unless they are interviewing for a management position ( I have waited tables while working on my 2nd degree - never took a resume with me for that interview)

"All i have to say to people like Emmanuel is I hope you're happy, when someone you know gets robbed or their house gets broken into or their car gets stolen its because of people like you. People like you who turn decent people like me down for jobs and then their forced to turn to a life of crime in order to feed themselves or their families."

So since you did not get the job you are going to start a life of crime?? How nice - Great attitude -

How can you go to a job interview if you don't know where the place is? You don't ask the guy looking to hire you over and over and over how to get there, it makes you look like an idiot.

Also, put the race card away, it's embarrassing. You play the card when there's actual racism, not when you're not even sure. The fact is, you blew it on this one.

If you were looking for me to hire you and you couldn't get here after I'd provided you with an address, then I wouldn't hire you. It's that simple. Heck, I wouldn't trust you to wax my car.

Google it! Map quest! GPS! Ask a friend! Geez.

Going forward, remember to get directions on your own. Never ever keep calling your potential new employer for directions. If you don't know where it is, leave early to avoid complications or even better, make it a point to go by the place a few days before the interview so you know how to get there.

Use your head next time and you'll land the job!
