I was researching classic car parts on a website and one of their advertisers offered a vehicle's history for $1. I put in my 45-year old car's VIN to search, it took several minutes but 'downloaded' a report, indicating it had checked a host of records such as insurance claims, ownership, rust damage reports, accident and theft reports, etc., and then said I could get the report for $1 for putting in my credit card information. The next step was a registration form indicating that I was signing up for receiving emails from them and their business associates and also for a $120 charge spread over 6 months to use their VIN search engine. I did not see anywhere to download the report I was told they had prepared for my car. I backed out at that point and did not fill out the registration form. I eventually found a live chat with a customer service rep who told me that my VIN didn't have the required 17 characters so I would not be getting a history from them and I would not be getting a refund. I was welcome to do a search on another VIN. I don't have another car to research, I don't have the history they indicated they had prepared for me, and I am out a $1 but at least she said they would not be charging me the $120. As I fully believe I have been ripped off, the rep gave me another phone number to call for additional customer service. I have tried the number several times and all I get is 'lines are busy, please hold.' No one comes on the line. From previous reports on this website, I understand that the $1 only buys you a general report on the make and model of the car and not on your own personal vehicle, so that is a rip off by itself!
