I recently received an alleged debt of $800 from AFni saying that I owed this to Charter. Called Charter re: the debt, they told me they sold the account to Afni about 2.5 years ago, they have no idea what the debt is regarding of, and also they "purged, deleted" my records. If I want more info I would need to contact Afni. Contact Afni, Afni only has the amount of the debt and no other information. Afni tells me if I need more info about the debt I would need to contact Charter. AGain, called Charter, Charter gets irritated and tells me they don't have the record at all, the customer service rep from charter was rude and I was rude back however she hung up on me. Supervisor from Charter also tells me they no longer have the records and cannot tell me what the debt is about. I've been w/ Charter for a very long time, if I supposedely had this debt from them why didn't they contact me and why didn't they cut off my cable service? Of course, Charter doesn't have the answers to my questions. I'm in the process of looking for a new service in the area, but until then I'm so frustrated about AFni and Charter Communications b/c none can tell me what the debt is.

Charter has nothing to do with accounts once they have been sold to Afni

AUTHOR: Kimberly - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 04, 2007

I worked at Charter Communications for 2 years as a customer service representative and received many calls about accounts that had been sent to AFNI. I just want to clarify that once a customer contacts Charter about the alleged debt, the Charter representative can not see anything about the acct except the customers name, address, phone number, and the debt amount. Everything else is cleared as it does with any other company that have sold their debts to a collection agency. Once it is sold, that is Charter's way of getting rid of the account, and the collecter buys those accounts to attempt to collect. The ONLY way to resolve it is through AFNI and if they tell you to contact Charter, you should be able to have them do a conference call that way you have both parties on the line. There were many times where I had to do this and contact AFNI myself for the customer to let the AFNI rep know that we don't handle the accounts. Bottom line, Afni handles the acc ounts and if they tell you differently than they don't know how to do their job. Even though I don't work for Charter any longer, I just feel I have to protect some of the things that customers get upset about because a lot of employees don't know what they are doing which can be the case at any company, but it is aggravating when you get tossed around. I just wanted to clarify this for you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions! I still have a few connections with employees there... :o)

FTC won't cut it!

You can file a complaint with the FTC but they won't take it UNLESS there have been several like yours filed with them - in other words, they have to have many more than just one report. YOU can file a complaint through the Fair Credit Reporting Act - access it online, download the complaint form and file it! This is the entity that deals with collection agencies, and also file with your attorney generals office, also with your local city citizens advocacy office (assuming they have one) but call your city hall and make inquiries! Charter has to have an agreement with the city in order to offer services to its residents - get a copy of that lease agreement from the city - it is public domain. Then, do not hesitate to file a complaint with the CEO of Charter (I've filed four with him) and I tell him how his company stinks! Literally!!! If it is a telephone service problem (lines, service, installation, etc) then file a complaint with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) and keep on yelling until something is done - and, good luck!!!

You mean I'm not alone?

AUTHOR: Angie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 27, 2006

I found out this past week that there was an entry put on my credit report from these clowns. Here is the kicker: Firstly, the alleged debt is also from Charter, but the SOL is about to be up in June, and they put this on my report March 13 2006. Secondly, I don't owe it. It is a long story and I'm not going to get into that, but it involved an issue with Charter and their cable lines and such being draped across my property and me refusing to pay the bill unless they rented the pole in which their crap was on.

I got the City involved and I still have the letter stating it was agreed upon that I didn't have to pay them what I refused to pay, and because we were getting satelite TV, I no longer needed their service, and all was well. That was almost 7 years ago. I called that place AFNI and was told it was going to stay on my credit until June. I told them they will need to provide verification of the debt. I told them they were in violation, and the guy laughed at me. I told him it was his responsibility to prove to me I owe the debt not mine to prove I don't owe it. I told him that I will not settle for a computer generated print out. I told him I wanted a letter from Charter. I know I will need to send a request via certified mail, but before I ended the call to this moron, I made sure I got the last word.

I told him if he wanted the bill paid so bad; he could pay it after all, he owed it about as much as I did. One more thing I forgot to add, it took several minutes to "find" me in their system. I ended up getting transfered to this clown. He kept telling me he needed my SS# in order to "look it up". I told him I would not do that. He then got cocky with me and asked why I even called then. I told him I would give him my SS# if he gave me his. This is a low life slithering company, and I'm glad I got to know them. They just met their worst enemy. I know I don't owe this bill, they know I don't owe this bill, it should be quite interesting to see who wins. I'll be reporting them, and asking Bud from budhibbs.com hi thoughts. I will be filing my FTC report as well as Minnesota Attorney General. Good Luck to all that has the pleasure of dealing with them.

You Do Have Recourse!

AUTHOR: M. A. - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 27, 2006

No. 1 - get a copy of your credit report from all three bureaus - Trans Am, Experian, and CCS, then file a dispute with the credit bureau for this file on your report. Then call the company that bought your file from Charter - they have to give you information about it. If they do not tell them they are in violation of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, then go to the Fair Credit Reporting Act website, download a complaint form, and file your complaint against the company that is harassing you about this charge. Write a letter to these people! Tell them they are to "cease and desist" contacting you by any form whatsoever for a bill you do not owe and request they submit immediate proof as to your liability. Collection companies MUST comply with what you are telling them. The credit bureaus are to investigate any claim of dispute against an entry on your record. If they do not you can file against them for not doing their job properly.

In order to get resolution you MUST defend yourself and be prepared to rock the boat! Collection companies by these account for pennies on the dollar, send out harassing leters, make harassing phone calls, and by law they are not allowed to but you must tell them in writing to stop and desist immediately. They cannot call your neighbors, your place of employment, etc. or they can be put out of business. Stand up and protect your rights!!!
