Dana Kay New Scam from Shaw Financial Inc. Los Angeles CALIFORNIA

I got today 09/22/2015 Letter from South Africa with a check for $3,950.00 Letter said that I'm a winner some kind of sweepstakes and I will get $300,000.00 but even the check looks a real but stipulation in the letter make me aware that it is a SCAM. I went on internet and found this page. Instead calling the number on the letter I'm reporting it, be sure it's a scam. At this point I called the number and when phone call was aswered I was instructed to go to the bank and deposit the check , when I said I'm not going to do that until I check the autenticity of the check, he what ever he was hang up on me. When I called second time I got message that phone number is invalid. The number to call was 1-877-219-3279. I wonder if it's no way to locate the scammer and put stop before people get hurt and lose the money ?
