A friend of mine was going through a hard time and got turned on to Discovery! in Dallas.  After spending a weekend away at the camp, he talked about how great it was and how much it helped.  He didn't provide many details but described it as just a good time with good people.  I didn't think much of it until a bit later when he was going back over and over and started to pressure me to attend.  I didn't really have any demons to get out but he assured me it was more about fun and meeting people than therapy.

From the onset, things were creepy.  These guys immediately set you up as being a 'negative person' for questioning their tactics and methods.  More importantly, they prep you to cut off outside opinions from friends and family, and taking on the staff and other members of the group as your new family.

Luckily, I wasn't in a rough emotional state, but almost everyone around me was going through something really rough that had them seeking an answer(usually divorce\relationship problems).  I haven't been there, but I can only imagine how vulnerable you are in that situation.  They REQUIRE you to room in close quarters and share everything, forming emotional bonds.  Not a bad thing in and of itself, but when you combine that with the preperation to cut off outsiders(your friends and family) and instructions to keep scheduled contact with other inductees and specifically encourage them to keep attending(PAID) meetings, you can see how this gets scary fast.

After the creepy feelings\revelations I turned to google and went down the LGAT rabbit hole all the way back to the original founders of the seminars Discovery sprang from... worst fears confirmed.

PLEASE be careful with this sort of thing.  Anyone marketing a product towards vulnerable people deserves a high level of scrutiny.  Research, read, listen, and do not dismiss.  A truely good thing can stand up to questioning and scrutiny, with no need to hand-wave it away with broad accusations of 'negativity.'
