I took my 2001 Olds Alero into Dobbs Tire and Auto Center on 9/6/05 for a squeak from under my hood. I was phoned two hours later to say that it was a belt and tensioner that needed replacing at a cost of around $240. I told them to fix my car.

I picked up the car, began to drive away, and found the same squeak within a matter of seconds. I turned around in the middle of the street and returned to Dobbs. I was told it was my front brakes making the squeak and that the cost would be $562 to fix. After questioning the replacement of the tensioner and belt, I was told that these were the cause of the second squeak I was hearing. (I had only heard the shrill sound of the brakes.)

I immediately left and took it to a local NTB. At a cost of $230, my brakes were fixed and there is no more noise.

This is the second time Dobbs has done this to me. Earlier this year, the car was in twice because some of my warning lights were going off. The first time I needed an alternator- the lights were still on. The second time it was a sensor in the wheels, the lights did go off.

So did my temper.

I'll be the first to admit that the car is a piece of crap, but the gentlemen at Dobbs Tire and Auto Center in Maryland Heights are no gentlemen at all. I strongly believe that repairs that were done to my car were completely unnecessary and that further repairs were exactly what Dobbs was looking for.

Don't go to Dobbs.

Rebecca, please find ONE repair shop to handle ALL of your needs. They are easy to find. Look for a NAPA AutoCare sign or if you feel more comfortable with a truly independent shop, find one. Take your car there on your day off and ask them to start at the front and work to the back and list everything they find wrong. Have them list the findings according to "safety" versus "cosmetic" issues. As you save up the money, have them fix the issues one at a time untill the car is back to like new. When you have one shop doing everything for you, they will take better care of you and the car. You may have to ask friends and family members for recommendations, but find ONE and stick with them. They should be able to handle every mechanical repair you need. Electrical issues are not mechanical, just as body work is not. These issues should be handled at shops that specialize in them, as they will offer you better work at better prices. Good luck in the future. Aleros aren't bad cars.
