On August 2, 2011 I ate at East Gate BBQ in Morgan City, LA. It was my first visit and will be my last. According to the Louisiana Secretary of State Corporate Division the registered agent is Harlan Kappel. The two officers for this establishment is Harlan Kappel and Megan Myers.
The establishment itself is nice-looking and clean. The food is not terribly bad. Some items could use improvement. My reason for no longer returning is the owner's bad attitude. He seriously need to take a couple courses on customer service and customer relations if he wants his business to last a year.
I ordered a bacon hamburger with the side order of rice dressing. The hamburger was cooked as I wanted it, was not dry, and had a good flavor. The rice dressing had a good flavor as well.
I had also ordered an appetizer called Loaded French Fries. It's french fries with sautd onions and mushrooms, bacon, "homemade cheese sauce", bacon, and sour cream on top. I took a couple bites of it and noticed the fries were soggy. I look at the bottom of the basket and there was what looked like liquid cheese.. The consistency of water. It was grease. About almost a quarter inch deep.
I asked the waitress if the Loaded French Fries could be taken off my ticket. I had only eaten a few fries of the large order because of the grease saturation. I even showed the waitress the grease.
She came back and said that it wouldn't be removed from the ticket. I asked who said this, whether a manager, supervisor, etc. She said it was the owner. Before she even left the table the owner came to the table.
I explained to him the situation and showed him the food. He tells me that on the menu the description mentions the way the food is prepared. No where on the menu does it mention anything about a grease soup.
He then tells me that the grease is from the sautd onions and fried bacon. To me that should be drained first. I disputed the matter with him and he finally states that because he wanted me to come back that he guessed he was going to take it off. This was AFTER I had to argue the matter with him. Initially he stated to me that he was not going to remove it and tried to validate charging me for something that was an unacceptably prepared item and an item I did not eat and was not satisfied with.
He commented that the grease added the flavor to the item. I don't see how a large puddle of grease could add flavor. I have heard that bacon grease can be used for flavor but I don't consider having fries floating in it to be a flavor sauce.
After this experience I can't say I'd ever return. If this owner does not shape up his business will not last very long.
