Richard James is the CEO of Evertide Games. A little while back (2015, I believe) Mr. James got together with comic artist Tarol Hunt of Goblins Comic. Their plan was to create a card game based off of the works of Mr. Hunt.
Goblins has a large and very loyal community. Most of them have been reading the comic since its inception. Most of them had connected with Mr. Hunt through live camera drawing sessions, and through his blog. Mr. Hunt lives very modestly, and his followers had been keeping up with his attempt to make a living off of his comic work.
Cue Evertide Games. All of Mr. Hunts fans were happy to see a post talking about his new business connection with Evertide Games. A new card game was being developed in collaboration with Mr. Hunt, and Richard James' corporation. The fans were informed and given an address to the kickstarter where they could donate to the initial setup.
The fans of Goblins Comic raised $180,000 in good faith that it would be used to develop, physically, the game that had been conceptualized by Mr. Hunt for months. His notes driving the pocketbooks of his loyal followers.
Once the kickstarter had closed out, Richard James (who had opened the original kickstarter account) closed out the kickstarter, and emptied the funds into his own private account. For months Mr. Hunt attempted to contact Kickstarter (which I will tell you here deserves its own report due to the way they have their bylaws set up) only to be told that the original person setting up the account had full rights to the money collected.
Mr. Hunt was never given the money to create his game. Richard James was never held accountable for stealing $180,000 raised on the backs of people he did not know, and who would not have given him the money in the first place. Mr. Hunt was so devistated that it took him out of work, and caused him emotional and mental anguish to the point of almost discontinuing his profession and disappearing from the radar of all the fans who had helped support his game.
Mr. Hunt is back to work and has come through this grand theft knowing that his fans support him, even if his associate stole their money. Richard James is still selling games, except his Board Game Geek profile (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgamedesigner/6783/richard-james) says:
"This person should not be linked to the game Goblins: Alternate Realities. He created the KickStarter but abandoned the project as soon as it was funded, leaving his business partner Tarol to finish it."
It does not fully explain the extent to which Richard James fleeced Mr. Hunt, and the community that supports him.
Games by Richard James and Evertide Games are 'Count of Medici', 'Lords of Scotland', 'Mr. Card Game', 'Pirate Den', 'Stacket!',and 'Straw'. To support these games is to support theft.
