Upon reviewing my PayPal account to prepare my taxes, I found that I was charged $128 from Heremis Inc. The PayPal record showed no details to this transaction, and I could not remember ever dealing with this company.
I typed "Heremis Inc" in the web browser and found a connection to a site called Federalpapers.com. I did remember searching for a site to apply for my Federal TAx ID number, but do not recall utilizing PayPal.
I must admit that I was in the middle of moving to a new home, starting a new business, and I was not on top of my fiscal issues due to all the confusion. This is why I am just now realizing this problem as I prepare for my end of the year reporting. As I have never received an official document from the IRS confirming my tax identification number, I am now concerned that the number I have been using for my new business is fraudulent.
I have reviewed the Federalpapers.com site, and I can see where I would have filled this out to submit my request. Nothing on this application indicates that there is a fee for this request. I would have known that this should have been free to obtain, so again I am left scratching my head and highly frustrated as to how this occurred.

I just went to the site and filled out bogus company information and on the first page of the application it has a "Agreement" checkbox. You must check it in order to submit the information to be processed. It also states the marking this box means you agree to the Terms of Use and agree that Hermeris is a designated third-party.
Once I agreed and clicked "submit" and it took me directly to the payment option page. It gave the cost of the documents to be prepared and different options on how to pay (PayPal, Mastercard, Visa, Amex or Discover).
Federalpapers.com Terms of Use (very fine print at the bottom of website) clearly states that you will be charged different fees when applicable for their service.
Such as document processing fees, filing fee, publication fee, shipping fee or other.
Could you have accidently submitted payment? I don't think so. You may not remember doing it but there's no way you could've received your FEIN without paying.
As far as refunds go, once Hermeris has received your signature and filed the documents with the government agency, no refunds will be granted.
Regardless if you remember paying for it or not, services were rendered as you did receive the FEIN, so it's not likely you'll get a refund.
You can call the IRS to verify the FEIN is legitimate.
But I would warn anyone who wishes to apply for a Federal Employer ID to go directly to the IRS.gov website. Applying for a FEIN/EIN can be done by telephone, mail, fax or online and it's completely free. And you can be 100% certain you won't be ripped off.

I went to that web sight. They DO charge $128.00 for something you can get for FREE from the IRS. All you need to do is go to IRS.gov and you can apply on line for one. I think they want all that nosy information so they can latter sell you more stuff. I clue should have been when they asked if you wanted to get their newsletter.
