I advertised an apartment on roommates.com and got back an enthusiastic ill-spelled and poorly punctuated response from a woman in the UK. She claimed that she had completed her BA degree and was coming here for a Master's degree.
Her "uncle," who works in the HIV field, would send a check for $2800 to cover the rent, security deposit and a little extra so that she could buy computer and other equipment for her studies. She also sent a picture of a very alluring blond sitting on a bed--so that I could see how my new "roommate" looks!!!
I declined to send a picture or my phone number. Yesterday a check arrrived from the UK with no return address and with a check from Fishman Fishbowl LP for $3900. The memo line reads "Eric Nelson" not my name or the alleged name of my prospective "roommate."
Roommates.com has removed her from their membership list, but "she" still writes to me. I can't wait for the next email.
