Thanks to 2 other Ripoff Reports I was able to avoid being scammed by this individual. Gary claims to run a property management business. It appears that he uses stock photos of luxurious apartments and then offers to give you a discounted rate. The listing on craigslist was for a 1 bedroom, furnished apartment in the Mission Bay Area of San Franciscio. The apartment was listed at $1800 a month. But when I emailed Gary showing an interest he called offering me a special "student" discounted rate of $1600.

When speaking with him over the phone he seemed rushed, and has an African accent. My intution told me this must be too good to be true. After doing a bit of research, I found out it was. Thanks to 2 other ripoff reports I was able to avoid any monetary loss, but had almost gotten to the point of signing a lease and exchanging money. Being as I live on the East Coast and could not visit the apartment, I asked if I could have friends scope it out for me. He resisted claiming that he legally could not "disrupt the enjoyment of the premises for the current tenants." This was a major red flag for me. As a law student, I notified him of the right of the tenant to inspect the premises before committing to a contractual agreement and he mumbled some response about no third parties being allowed to check out the apartment.

The Lease then instructed me to send payment to a Dorthea D. Vansickle instead of him, and there was no explanation or mention of this individual or his relationship to her. After getting an uneasy feeling, I am so thankful that after doing a bit of research I found other ripoff reports citing the same exact interactions, prices, and photos with this individual in several different cities (D.C. and Boston).
