Attempted ripoff. My company received a balance due statement telling me to pay almost $3000.00 for an overdue account with AMEX - an account that our company has never had in its 23 yrs. of business. I phoned to inquire. The first call: I gave information from the statement and an explanation. I was asked to hold. After a couple of minutes of crackling and holding, the line went dead, then routed to the "if you'd like to make a call..." loop.

I redialed and reached a different rep. and had to go through the same explanation. "Please hold." I held and held and held and finally was told that "this co. does not handle this account any longer, you will have to call the vendor." "Why?" I asked. "I have not ever and do not now have an account with that company. I was asked to hold again - a long hold.... there were a few clicks and again, the "if you'd like to make a call, please hang up" loop.

I wonder how much money is made from this approach when luck has it that the recipient had an account and pays without checking it out well.
