We were so excited to purchase our first boat. My family and I had spent many years barely even being able to afford rent so to finally have reached a place in our life where we can afford to purchase a boat was beyond exciting.
We did some searching and found Hawk's Yachts. We looked at few boats and found one we liked. It was a used Bayliner. We arranged to take the boat our for a test spin. Everything was great. The boat ran well, it appeared to be in good condition. I was beyond excited.
The boat was ready in a few days and we went to go pick the boat up. We chose to drive the boat from the Marina to the dock where we were keeping the boat. On the way home the boat started to act sluggish. I stopped the boat and called Hawk Ennis to ask him what was wrong. He told me it was likely a fuel filter that needed to be replaced. So we kept going and the boat seemed fine after a few minutes. We docked the boat and went inside to have dinner.
Our 5 year old son was so excited to see the boat so we walked down to the dock to let him see it. Of course he says "Daddy, Daddy can we go out?" and I obliged as I'm sure any father would :)
We headed out into the bay and after about 5 minutes the boat just died on us. A friend of mine was onboard who had a lot more experience with boats than myself so I asked him what could be wrong. We couldn't figure it out. The boat was completely dead and would not start. I was stunned. I mean we literally just purchased the boat 2 hours ago.
I called Hawk and basically he said "Sorry", but there was nothing he could do. His response to me was, "Well you shouldn't have taken the boat back out."
After the boat was acting sluggish it stopped and nothing appeared to be wrong, so never in a million years did I think something was going to happen. Hawk was extremely rude to us. I was really in complete shock because I had just bought a boat from this guy.
We ended up having to have the boat towed. I felt awful, our poor 5 year old son was terrified. We had only planned on staying out for a few minutes but with the boat being dead, night time came and it was honestly very scary for all of us. We ended up being stuck out on the water with the boat dead for 4 hours. I have never felt so bad in my life for my son it was awful.
To make a long story short it cost us $10,000 to get the boat fixed, that's not including the $2,000 it cost us to be towed. I had numerous conversations with Hawk Ennis. I can't even begin to tell you how rude he was to us. He kept trying to blame us and say it was our fault. He sent a mechanic to come look at the boat. I won't put the mechanics name in here but the mechanic that Hawk sent to look at the boat told us that this was in NO WAY our fault that we were basically sold a lemon. The mechanic said, there is no way they should have ever sold this boat to you." According to the mechanic if they had actually inspected the boat they would have known the engine was bad. Which brings me to another point. There is an inspection you can have done on a boat when you purchase it. The sales person told us about this, but he very cleverly preyed on the fact that we were excited new boat owners. He actually encouraged us to not have the inspection done. His exact words were, "There's absolutely no need to do an inspection on this we've checked it over very carefully and everything is in to shape, if you have an inspection done it will take quite a while and you will have to wait to get your boat." The salesman's name was Cary Henley. We sadly made a decision to trust them and it was obviously the wrong decision. But not one that we should be penalized for because when someone buys a boat and it dies the day they buy it, that is not right that the dealer wouldn't make it right.
To really do my due dilligence I had 3 other mechanics look at the boat and all of them said the same thing, that we were sold a lemon. All of the mechanics have also agreed to confirm that this is all 100% truth.
I called and texted with Hawk numerous times and he refused to do anything. At first when this all began after many conversations Hawk finally agreed to split the cost of the repairs with me. However when he found out that it was the engine he refused to do anything.
I can't even begin to say how disappointed I am. I never imagined my first ever boat purchase would have gone this bad. It's beyond disappointing. I never dreamed I would buy a boat for 11k and then the next day I bought it find out I had to spend 10k to get it fixed. I just want this made right. And if Hawk refuses to make it right I hope someone who may make the mistake of buying a boat from him will see this and be warned. He obviously is a man who does not stand behind his word.

I am shocked by the allegations by Sean. He not only left out several facts, many of his statements were false. First of all, Mr. Wrench showed up at closing on a used brokerage boat (2 hours late) with 2 friends with bags - obviously for an overnighter - presumably on the boat. Mr. Wrench waived a survey (boat inspection) on the brokered boat. He had no boating experience. I asked him if he had taken the Maryland Boaters safety course. He said he had not. I asked him if he had gotten insurance on the boat and he said he had not.
I told him the last tow I had cost me $880 and that the $100 for tow insurance is well worth it. I told him the boat could not be registered until the next morning because of his lateness - the Department of Natural Resourses was already closed and that he would be operating the boat illegally if he took it that evening. He laughed it all off and literally said "What could really happen?!" I told him as an experienced boater - it could all happen. You could get pulled over, you might need a tow, you would be ticketed etc. He then asked me if there were any local waterfront restaurants he could stop at. He moved here 2 weeks prior from New York and did not know these waters at all.
I told it would be better to leave the boat at our marina, get the proper registration and get the insurance squared away. Since he scoffed at that idea I told him that if he took the boat he should go straight to his home dock (I gave him verbal directions) and I would meet him in the morning with proper documentation. I told him his cavalier attitude towards boating scared me. I even told my fellow workers that “I would not be surprised if that guy would be locked up tonight.” As they departed (I also needed to lend him a Coast Guard bag), I reiterated to go straight to his dock and I would be by in the morning.
About an hour later I got a call from him from the boat saying it was running rough - but that was after they had gotten home and decided to take it out again. I told him to take it right back and I would have a mechanic there in the morning. Could just be minor issue but I have no idea so to be safe take it back to his dock.
The next phone call I received was 9:15 at night and it was the buyer saying he was dead in the water and did not know what to do. I was obviously furious with him as I had told him to leave it at his dock and the mechanics would be by in the morning. He was dead in the water and thankfully he was not too far from home - since he really had no idea where he was. I gave him the number to Sea Tow (as I had recommended he get insurance in case of this type of emergency). Come to find out his little boy was on board in the dark with an operator who knew nothing about boating safety or even exactly where he was. I did reprimand him about this huge amount of irresponsibility towards his son and reminded him about the fact I specifically told him to leave the boat at the dock. Taking it out obviously exacerbated whatever the possible minor issue into a huge one - to the point the boat would not start.
As promised I had a mechanic at his dock first thing in the morning and without knowing the circumstances said the boat should not have been sold in that condition. Well, it was not in that condition when it was sold - he put it in that condition. After further inspection the mechanic says it appears he put the boat in reverse so violently that it forced water into the exhaust up to the motor. I was willing to help all I could but his lack of boating knowledge and his irrational operation of the boat led to the problem. As a brokered boat - we are not the owners of the boat. We are like real estate agents - we provide a service to assist owners in selling their boat.
The seller could not be held responsible for this incident and we obviously are not responsible or liable - if we were I am sure the threat of his attorney would have led to a different result for him and not complaining on this site. If anything I did all I could to mitigate is complete irresponsibility and operation of the boat. The mechanic also mentioned it appeared to have been quite a party on board the boat as there were beer cans and vomit in the cockpit. He also failed to tie the boat properly to his dock to the point it was being damaged by the wave action slamming the boat into the dock. It was only neighbors who saw what was happening and retied the boat properly.
We are very sorry he did not heed any of our suggestions and the result is what it is. I am flabbergasted that we are now listed in a Ripoff Report due to his completely irresponsibile actions. We have been in business in 10 years and never had such a complaint. It is an injustice I even have to go into such detail to defend our good name.
