I'd like to start off by saying i'm writing this report on my cell phone because I don't want to use up any more of my allotted data for the month, as I have already bought one "token", $5 for an extra 483 mb until my data threshold is rest. Extremely misleading as they don't say it's 500mb your buying, but led me to believe I was resetting my data cap back to 10gb. Notice I said I got 483mb, the 17mb was used instantly while buying the token on their Web page.
In any case, I saw their ad and have no other service providers in my area. The ad itself mentions absolutely nothing about their FAP, data threshold, our data throttling. At all. The tech they sent out to set up the service did not mention it, at all. For 2 months I wondered why my internet would be fine one day, watching Netflix and all, then the next day even simple Web pages would time out.
I finally looked into it and called their customer service (after buying my token and seeing the timers on their Web page for my 'data threshold reset' and my 'bonus bytes'). Finally, I was fully informed of all their policies in detail.
Needless to say, I was appalled. 2 bills at $75 a pop (signed up for the $49 package but they tacked on another $12 for repair express, an optional repair service, and more for their equipment lease fee, also not mentioned) and they were "throttling"my data for 3 Weeks out of every month. I assumed it was like any other dsl where I am paying for the speed, not the speed and the amount of data I can use before it doesn't work (I should say work so sluggishly it's not even worth trying).
I want so badly to not have to go with this falsely advertising, money grubbing company. I had to research this all by myself, thank god i'm a little tech savvy and found the satellite modem setup page, which the technician who installed couldn't bring up, complaining about my girlfriends mac the whole time saying that was the issue. Also, while on the phone with then canceling the $12 charge they snuck on me, the salesman informed me the "bonus byte" period (when you can use the internet like normal, no worrying about your days threshold) ended at 8am every day. I was checking it this morning on the modems page and it's 11 am.
The people who work for Hughesnet don't even know what's going on. Definitely a good clue to avoid them completely if you can.
In closing, for more than the price that any other ISP offers in most areas, at least for a base package, they monkey all your data and will kill y our connection when you reach your limit. You'll find yourself rationing megabytes. The only reason they still exist is for us who live in less populated areas, and they know they have us by the balls. I will continue to hope that any one of the many isps in my area who service just miles up the road will offer service here someday soon.
Also, sorry about any spelling mistakes or weird words, again I am using my cell phone so as to not use any data
