Had an accident in Austin. I have AAA but the police came and said they had already called a tow truck. J&J showed up and towed the car. Looked them up on the Austin BBB and Angie's list and decided to get the car out ASAP! It still cost $456! $150 for the tow, $100 for labor and the rest for storage and other BS fees. It doesn't even cost that much in New York City for just towing and storage! Fines are another matter but there were no tickets issued in this matter. And why would the police call a company with an F rating from the local BBB?

A former tow truck operator coments

A few things, first I bet if you check all the towing companies that do impound and accident towing in your area have an F rating.
Second: yes it sounds like you were over charged. But it may be a mandated charge under the Police/emergency tow agreement for your area.
THird: The police call who is "UP" on the list of emergency tow companies, they have no discretion. This list in our area is negotiated and mandated by the city and county councils.
And finally we had to "over charge" to cover the ones that, for what ever reason, we didn't get paid for. Impounds and accidents we didn't get paid for about 40%.
So yes its a rip, but in our area unless your vehicle is in an unsafe location or posing an environmental hazard you can insist your towing company come and get the car.
