I moved into Jefferson Woods Apartment Complex last June. I had no idea that my $1225 a month rent would buy me such a cheap place to live. The walls are about a millimeter thick, my back door is broken and slams against the frame whenever the wind blows, all my outlets are put on crookedly, the first night I ran the bath it leaked into the apartment under me, and there are no dumpsters anywhere near my apartment.

However, the thing that set me off the most was when I found out certain tenants were getting special rent rates that weren't offered to others. The rent was promised to go up to $1310!! a month starting this summer, but one of the tenants in my building accidentally told me they'd offered to increase his to only $1235. I don't think anyone else knows about this, and they should. There is basically no snow removal, they over-salt the streets so they're extremely icy, and I am furious that I've given them as much money as I have. If you're thinking of moving into this apartment complex, THINK AGAIN! Who makes rent cheaper for some than others?!

Was there a cheaper rent deal offered?

AUTHOR: Leticia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 16, 2006

When your friend moved in. I moved into an apartment complex in TX after my friend (We met while I was moving in.) and I paid less than her, because they had a deal going on the month I moved in. She was paying close to $200 more than I was because of this deal. When her lease was up they had a deal on 3 bedroom apartments, that she took a part of and didn't pay anything more than she had been paying on her 2 bedroom because of the deal.

Sometimes it's being in the right place at the right time.

It is my Business

The reason I even care is because it's one of my friends who told me the information. He moved in a few months AFTER I did, and therefore I do think it's my business since he told me. I have every reason to be irritated that someone who moved in after me was offered to have his rent lower than me. And yes I am absolutely moving in June, as I could mortgage a house for what I'm paying for rent now.

NOT UNCOMMON PRACTICE...

The people who pay less than you have probably been there longer than you have. Not only that, most places are only allowed to raise rent a certain percentage per year. Leasing agents will rent out apartments for what the going market rate is at the time.

When I lived in San Francisco, I was paying $2100 a month for my apartment (1999-2001). The people next door to me had been there ten years and were only paying $800 a month for the same sized apartment. If they had decided to move, they would have been paying market rent just like anyone else just moving in a place.

Also, some tenants could be getting some assistance for housing. You don't know their circumstances and it is really none of your business..it is between the tenant and the landlord.

Thank you for the heads up. And am I correct in assuming that you will be moving when your lease is up?
