I attended Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology,a college that is part of Kaplan University, last year and part of this year. I was enrolled in the Pharmacy Tech program that was a TOTAL SCAM. After attending class for 6 months Our teacher informed us that the school was letting her go and getting rid of the day program in 6 weeks. Outraged we confronted the Program director who told us it wasn't true.

After 2 weeks of lies the school finally told us that they were getting rid of the day program. I complained so much they extended class until I was finished. While day classes continued the school continued to enroll students into the day class without telling them they were going to nights in December. I told the students and the school didn't set up meetings with these students until they had been enrolled long enough to not get a full refund.

After the 6 weeks we did get a new teacher,(the night class teacher). Her first day she was apauled to hear that we had not learned everything required to be a pharmacy tech. Upon hearing this I was very upset since I only had 6 weeks left and could not learn everything in that time.

After complaining, the program director called me to his office and said,"You're going to shut your mouth it's my turn to talk. If you talk about these issues anymore with students I will personally escort you off of the property." The school set up an after school program to catch me up. After dropping for a few months I came back to finish my Externship.

After completing my externship I was informed by another student that I was supposed to be attending a class to prepare us for the Board exam. I paid for this class, but was never told to attend. Apperently no was told about this class. i have talked to many other students who did not receive classes they paid for. I dont know what to do because those student aren't willing to file a lawsuit. They will testify, but thats it.

If you have any suggestions how I can get my money back Please help me. One more thing the school was also using real peoples old prescriptions to practice reading scripts. Isn't that a viloation of HIPAA?

Well the first response is very professional and helpful.  However, the second response seem to me to be an employee there.  Not only do they seem to be trying to put the individual down but need to get some common sense.  I have been to a Community College for two different degrees and unfortunately a current student at Kaplan.  I have tons of friends with degrees from other schools and as for the smart comment "s for your claim that you paid for a class but "were not told to
attend," since when does a college need to send you a personal
invitation to show up at a class for which you have enrolled and paid??"  It's called a class schedule duh! It is not the student's job to do the schools especially someone completely new to a higher education.  How is someone suppose to know when a class starts without a schedule it's just not possible.  The college I previously attended as well as the ones of my friends always were taken care of by the school and kept informed on their classes.  To the person that wrote about their problem do not let this individual discourage you they are probably one of the employees there that have obviously have the same rude attitude as everyone else there.

Not unless you're using "real people's old prescriptions" in an unprofessional manner and failing to maintain confidentiality of this information. You are training to be a pharmacy technician, are you not? Well you are going to encounter sensitive personal information in such a career, and it is your responsibility to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in your work.

As for your claim that you paid for a class but "were not told to attend," since when does a college need to send you a personal invitation to show up at a class for which you have enrolled and paid??

Perhaps this is not the best career or educational experience for you.

Kaplan U - Didn't receive classes I paid for

Leslie:

I am not an attorney so please do not construe my comments as legal advice. Your situation is relatively new so you may still have options. You do however; have administrative duties that you must follow now should you decide to follow through with legal action later.

Firstly, whenever you speak to anyone at the college you attend, tape record the conversation IF YOUR STATE ALLOWS RECORDING WITHOUT THE OTHER PERSONS KNOWLEDGE OR IF THE COLLEGE ADVISES YOU THAT THE CALL IS BEING RECORDED. NEVER record someone without their knowledge if your state does not allow you to do so. Usually the business you are calling has an automated answering system that tells you if the call is being recorded. If they are recording you, you may record them without telling them you are doing so.

Secondly, I am certain that your college has a grievance procedure that you must follow and exhaust before you can seek any legal remedies. Follow them and maintain copious records!

Lastly, contact the program of accreditation for the college and file a complaint with them. Kaplan is accredited through the NCA or North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Google the name for information on contacting this organization.

Following this method of resolving problems with your school can be arduous and time consuming, but it will need to be done if your want a lawyer to take the case to the next level provided it is not resolved to your satisfaction using the indicated suggestions herein.

Good luck to you!
