First of all I must say I have a Felony On my criminal record and I was aware of an apparent rule of most all states that states you cannot work in any law enforcement division with a felony. I got this felony over 20 years ago and here is where the dilema came about.
I decided in 2002 that minumum wage was really starting to suck so I decided to go to college. I realized that there are mostly young individuals that attend college in person and that there was another option that I could attend college online. I made the mistake of calling Kaplan college first and when the advisor asked me what i would like to do as a career I told her I would really love to be a police officer however I have a felony and that looks like it will hinder me from doing so.
This advisor told me that because my felony was over 10 years old it should not hinder me at all and to not mention it on any applications because it will not show up. I had no other info to go by but her word and so I signed up and don't you know it throughout my schooling I asked several times from my instructors (whom where supposingly in law enforcement) if my felony would hinder me and they all pretty much said the same thing as this advisor, they each had different years but they all made me feel safe in completing my schooling.
So I did, and I must say I passed more than 1/2 of my classes when I really should not have and failed some when I should not have. I feel this is because they actually do not have certified teachers they basically have anyone that wants to teach, teaching.
well to make a long story short after 3 years and $30,000 later I CANNOT get a job in Law Enforcement I called the school and was instructed to try and get my record Esponged which I did and that did nothing for me, again I was instructed to apply in different states, Which I did that did nothing for me. SO after getting the d**n run around I sent a letter/complaint into Kaplan asking them to advise me as to why there personel mislead me into believing that I could do the impossible. Then I asked them to allow me to Attend there college for free in a degree program that I CAN ACtually utilize so that I can afford to pay the Government there $30,000 that they want. I was told Sorry you have no proof that our advisors told you anything and Good Luck.
I feel that this so called college is a d**n rip off and I am surprised to see how easy it must be for a organization to be able to call themselves a college and get funding assistance from the Government. This was a very expensive learning experience.

Let me add more to my story If I have not already touched on this previously. I was advised by a staff Member in Job Placement at Kaplan to get my felony Esponged and this would help. I did that and it did nothing for me. I was also advised to apply out of state and to not mention my felony to anyone because it is so old once it is esponged they more than likely would not come across it.
I have filed a grievance with Kaplan thru there process and it got me nowhere They wanted me to show proof that there advisors said anything to me. I was also told it clearly states in there catalog (which I never seen or heard of) that anyone with a felony would not be able to get employment in certain fields. I specifically asked more than once and to more than one person BEFORE I enrolled if my record was going to be an issue in the future and was repeatedly informed NO because of the time frame involved. I even asked a teacher who claimed to currently be a police officer if it would be an issue and was informed it would not be because it was over 10 years ago and I have had no issues since. Let me also be clear that the felony I recieved was Purchasing stolen Property. I purchased a car stereo from a Friends , Friend and he had stolen it. I had no knowledge of him doing so but I was over 18 and he was not. So in MI this was a felony it no longer is, but it was. I worked for Kaplan at an on ground school for almost four years. I was the director of one of the health care programs. The admissions' reps don't care what your background states or if you will be able to get a job once you graduate. If you have a felony on your background, you will not be able to get a job. They don't see that as their problem. I had many students sent over to me who would not even be able to get a nursing license because of their criminal backgrounds and admissions would be mad at me because I would not let them in the program. Why rip these people off, take $25,000 of their money and then not be able to even get a nursing license? These people are bottom feeders. They prey upon students who don't know any better. That's just one of my stories. I have many more.

You need to be careful with online for-profit schools....they will tell you anything to get you to enroll. Their sales staff usually has a very high turnover rate and they must meet quotas to keep their jobs....
Regardless of this, I would think it would have been obvious that having a felony on your record would have caused problems with getting a job in law enforcement. Felonies do not fall off your record like bad/defaulted debt does...they stay..However, not all companies will hold that against you. Some might ignore anything convictions over 10-20 years...
