I signed up for classes at Kaplan University online in Sept of 06. I finally received my registration refund in March of 07. It took several phone calls and many hours on the phone to accomplish a refund. I think I spoke to everyone at that University before they finally understood that they were responsible for locking me out of my classes then putting me in the wrong classes.

I originally called to just get some info on the classes they offered that I was interested in. The time was less than a week before the classes were to begin. They guarnteed that they could get me in on time. I knew this was impossible because the time it would take to tranfer my transcrips from other colleges I have attended and the finical aid process. Well they finally got all the info they needed but failed to get me into the classes I needed. They tried to tell me I didn't qualify for a refund because I didn't cancel 7 days prior to the start of the classes. I didn't even know what classes they were putting me in because they had me locked out for the first 3 days of the start of the classes.

Once I discovered that I was in associates instead of bachelor classes I called my advisor. She told me not to go back into the classes or I would be charged for them. She tried to get me in the correct classes but never succeded. I canceled my finincal aid and they informed me I was the second person that day that had canceled for Kaplan University classes.

You know when the professor stresses in his opening that there is no reason for posting mis-spelled words because you have a spell check option in your posting box yet he mis-spelled words in his own posting, there might be a problem. I currently have someone persuing me to sign up for classes at FMU. After reading everything posted on this sight I probably won't sign up with them.

I am looking to get my Bachelors in Business then Masters. I own and operate my own business so time is limited to the internet only. Any suggestions for good online schools would be appreciated.

You can do better

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Personally, I think Kaplan bites big time. My girlfriend is almost through with her 4 year degree through them, but so far, they have been a total ripoff.

She has paid to repeat courses that were too advanced for her very early in the program, instead of offering those courses later. When she had to repeat, they would charge her for another copy of the same book she already had and refused to refund the cost.

In addition, an online tutor is supposed to be available for many of the more difficult subjects. The tutors are never available, and when she questions the instructor about an issue, she rarely receives any response, except for a few a week after the assignment was due and turned in.

To add insult to injury, their website bites big time, half the time, you can't get in to their site to complete assignments and get bumped out of class constantly. On several occasions, my girlfriend was given a poor participation grade because Kaplan's website was constantly having issues. (I am a network and systems administrator and can verify our home network was functioning just fine, so were dozens of other websites I was surfing and the same time, so it was not internet problems or local problems, it was Kaplan problems. Our 3 MB DSL works just fine, thank you).

Finally, the first year in school, they sent her a threatening letter, stating "you will not be allowed to graduate this year until you repay what you owe for failing a class". Hello! She is not graduating for about 4 years from that date!

If this is the way that Kaplan treats all its students, you can definately do better than their diploma mill.

Online Universities

AUTHOR: Chrystal - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 10, 2007

I never contacted Kaplan myself but I did contact a few other online colleges that I did not like. I currently attend Herzing College Online and love it. They have about 5 or 6 actual campuses you can go to as well. I have been in this college for almost 2 years and will be graduating in December with an Associates Degree. They offer several degree programs and the books are included. I don't believe the advisors are told to sell as many people on this as they can. Nothing that was said sounded like a sells pitch and it never has. Everyone here is very friendly and helps you right away. Anyhow, just make sure you really do your work before you get into something this important. I did research before I chose my school. One very important thing I learned was to make sure the school is a Nationally Credited School. I believe this is what makes their credits transferrable. Hope I help someone so they don't have problems in the future!
