I attended Katlaw Truck School October of 2013. When I first started looking into Truck Driving I did my research. I called and talked to 3 diffrent schools. I live in Douglasville so Katlaw was closer. The cost of the school was about what the others were so I was going to go with Katlaw. I was told by Ed that I would have no problem passing in 3 weeks unless I couldn't read and write or had some other issue.
I also was very concerned about going over the road. I wanted to go to work local I have a young family and needed to be home every night if possible. The people at Daly's Truck Driving School told me that I would not be able to get a local job righ out of school. Ed said it would not be a problem. I gave him the money mainly based on this.
When I started school it seemed like everything was going against me. The classroom was literally just the students sitting in class and reading the CDL manual which is free. The instructor barely showed up to simply tell us to take a practise test and grade it between ourselves. What a joke.
So I got my permit but at least 3 guys in class with me didn't so they couldn't go to the yard with us. They were really mad. When I got to the yard it was a joke as well we had 9 students and 1 instructor teaching us the Pre-Trip inspection. We once again were given some basic instruction for 5 minutes then left on our own to learn the pre-trip. 4 hours later we started doing the straight line backing. I got 15 minutes of driving in the first day because we had so many students on one truck. The next 4 days got a little better at least we were practising the maneuvers. The instructor simply yelled at us as if we were supposed to already know what to do.
The third week was road so we all got in trucks and went out to drive in traffic. At least we were out of the cold and they had to break us up into 2 trucks. One group was 5 people sitting on a bed in the back of the truck the other was 4. I was in the group of 4. It was really hard to see what was going on while you were not driving. The truck had no heat so we were cold. It smelled bad and was in really bad shape. The Instructor was not bad I think he knew how messed up the school was but he did his best.
Out of 9 guys who made it to the yard with me 3 of us were able to pass the test at the school and got to test with the state. I thought it would all be fine, I mean I felt bad for the other guys but at least I made it thru. Unfortunatley now I was in the testing phase. I got a test date for 2 weeks later this was the first available according to the school. I was out of the truck for 2 weeks before I went to test the first of many time. I was told I would be fine with the 2 weeks off when I asked about it. 3 of us drove up to Gainesville, Ga to test almost 2 hours away. We all failed the Air Brakes test which is the first thing you do. We had been taught to do it the wrong way and when we failed the instructor acted like it was our fault. I understand if one of us failed but none of us had any idea what we were doing.
Now retesting was the same 2 weeks out I had to retest 4 times total. I was in school for 3 months before I finally got my class A license. I was furious to say the least. But it wasn't over yet. Now I found out that there were no local jobs available for entry level drivers so I was lied to about that as well. I feel traumatized by the experience. I can't beleive that anyone would mislead so much about what you would expenrience.
Please do not give any money to these used car salesmen they will tell you what you want to hear get your money and then you can't get them on the phone to complain. I showed up at the office to talk to ED 3 diffrent times and he was not in the building even though I knew his car and he was there.
I hope this helps you not make the same mistake I did.
