It's really very simple: The company markets dishonestly. I ordered a single case of wine and read the offer (I thought) pretty carefully. I got a case of wine that was pretty decent, but not great. I paid $93 for it. I was considering buying another later after I finish the one I have (It takes me awhile to go through 15 bottles of wine).
To my great surprise, I got an email from Laithwaites that "Your order is on its way." What order? I didn't place an order. Apparently somewhere in the fine print of my original order, they had made me part of a "wine club" that sends out expensive shipments without even sending as much as an email warning first. So they charged me almost $180 for wine that I didn't even order or know about.
The marketing is completely deceptive, which means you can't trust this company. I don't suggest doing business with them at all. I certainly will not be placing any further orders from the company or recommendiing them to any friends, and I intend to contact my bank to file a complaint as well as filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and other agencies.

Laithwaites has issued a refund and canceled this membership. The company WAS NOT very up front about the membership and did resist giving a refund until I took to the Internet. However, I am pleased that they acted on my complaint and consider the matter settled.

I am a customer of Laithwaite wines, and I think they are great! It is true that the first box of wine was at an introductory price, and subsequent boxes are more than the initial introductory price, but they are very upfront about it. The wine club nature of the program is right on the webpage where one makes the initial purchase. The website says they will send a box once per quarter and bill accordingly, but cancellable at any time. The wines were very good, too. I am a bit of a wine snob, and the Italian wine program is outstanding.
