I noticed that my credit card had been charged $39.99 to renew a subscription to Harper's Magazine.

First, Harper's always sends me a renewal offer notice about a month ahead of time.  Second, renewal costs about $15/year.  Third, I had not authorized anybody to renew yet, because my sub does not run out until November, six months from now.

When I went to the company's site I found that they planned to send the magazine to my street, but not my address.  Instead it would go to last-four-digits-of-my-bank-account on my street.

So they were using my credit card and know my bank account number.
