A couple of weeks ago I subscribed to a service called "Name Toolkit" by Mashape.com. It's a service that provides whois queries on a subcription basis. Two days ago, after upgrading to/paying for a $25 subscription, I received an email from Mashape.com informing me that an attempted charge for $33.66 had failed, and would be attempted again in one day.
I keep the available balance on this particular debit card low for this very reason. The funds weren't available to cover the charge.
There was no explanation as to the charge by Mashape. Further, I began receiving emails from Mashape.com every hour informing me that the charged had been attampted again, and had failed.
I contacted Mashape and informed them of the problem. I got a canned response some time later by someone who said he'd look into the issue.
I called my bank and confirmed that the charge had been attempted many times in less than 24 hours. Again, there was no explanation from Mashape as to the charge.
Tonight, nearly 48 hours later, I received an email from Mashape telling me that the charge was the result of on over-usage. This is absolute bs, as I had hard-coded my program to cease execution when I was near my query limit. I kept a close eye on it to make sure I didn't go over my limit. I also received an email from Mashape informing me I was at 85% of my query limit a few hours before upgrading to the next plan. This was correct; I was at 85% of my limit, and I was well aware of this, and I never went over my limit.
Why would Mashape inform me what I was 85% of my usage, and not inform me if I went over the limit?
One more time, I received nothing from Mashape detailing the $33.66 charge.
In the email tonight Mashape informed me that they were going to drop the over-usage charge, out of the goodness of their heart. That would have been a nice gesture, had I gone over my limit. Given the fact that I didn't, this only further demonstrates their dishonesty.
Tomorrow I'll be cancelling my debit card, as I don't trust Mashape. I'd strongly discourage you from trusting this company as well.
