At the end of February I contacted MetroMovers to get an estimate by phone of a cross-town move (which I was paying for of my daughter's) of a 900 square foot apartment of stuff, no appliances. I was given the estimate of 2-4 hours at $60.00 per hour and a $50.00 trip charge. I agreed. I later had to call back and ask about a change of location and the addition of stairs to the bedrooms only and inquired if that made any difference, I was told "no". On March 1 at 8:00 AM the "movers" arrived in a rented Rider truck and had my daughter sign the contract. On there instead of 2-4 hours it said 4-5 hours estimate.
The movers told my daughter and my son-in-law that the driver had only worked at this one month and that he felt put upon because now he was being made in charge and a "trainer" to the other guy with no experience whatsoever. He told my son-in-law this in response to a comment as to why they were moving so slow.
Three hours later, they still had not completed the loading. They complained to the office that there were uncovered boxes and also garbage bags and this was slowing them down. I called the office and was told this by Shana Pearce. She says she then yelled at the driver to move faster. I told her these were not the problem. I did not say it was okay.
I finally met up with the "movers" and the kids and their new landlord over at the destination where they had already been for over a half hour when I arrived after about another 20 minutes I called the main office and they called the movers who said they were "lost". We offered to give them detailed directions but they refused. After a few more minutes they arrived while I was talking to the office. It took them a total of over one hour to arrive via freeway for a 30 minutes drive maximum.
The movers moved as though they were in slow motion. I have never before seen anything like it. They did not move items into the rooms they belonged because we asked them not to in order to attempt to save time. I called the office again I was told that they would take one hour of time off my bill. I said since the movers were so unprofessional that they caused a double time move, that was not satisfactory. I honestly wonder if they are told to move slow.
I at no time agreed that I was satisfied. When the move by this crew took so long, the office did nothing to stand behind their promises of service. I was actually told by Shana Pearce that the guys had to get done because there was another job waiting that would not happen if they did not arrive by 3:30. This was after 3:00 PM at the time. I signed and paid 'under protest'.
I spent $410.00 for a move that should have been no more than 1/2 that amount. This is completely due to the pace at which the movers "moved". They were new and did not know what they were doing and the main office did not take responsibility for their employees.
I felt that the company should when they clearly seemed to believe me when I said the pace was too slow to do more than "yell" at the crew by phone yet leave me with the bill for "services". I reported them to the BBB, no resolution. I was told to contact legal.
I provided a list of damages by the movers and they sent a repairman over to check and repair but without the list of items. A lost gold cross of my daughters with a diamond center (value $100.00)was never found nor did the company offer to pay. Items that were broken of glass not kept by my daughter meant no reimbursment. Now my only recourse is legal action...

The rebuttal is absolutely correct. I should have done the estimate in person but I was recommended to this mover by a friend who had used them two times.
Do your homework and certainly do not depend upon a referral or a BBB listing which is not a good indicator.
Get everything in advance and in writing and you should be protected.

You as a consumer are at fault here. You tried to do business over the phone. An estimate can not be given over the phone. This must be done in person, in house. What you got was a simple quotation of an hourly rate. There is not a person on the face of the earth that can give an estimate without seeing What has to be moved and where it has to be moved from. That is like calling a mechanic and saying my car is broke how much will it cost to fix it.
If a mover will not send out a representative to your home hang up the phone and call some one else.
