We made prior arrangements with this cafe to cover them as part of our travel story.   We were confirmed by Sharon at the restaurant to host us for dinner in exchange for a nice review story since we plan our travel stories in advance. Our publication has been in business since 1999.  Any business can turn us down but it is Not fair if someone confirms and then doesn't follow through as that prevents us from covering other places.  The email exchange is below and you can read from the bottom up.  This report is true and no intention of promoting our site.  I wanted to share the facts of what transpired.

We arrived on our planned day to do our review but Sharon told us when we walked in that she did not get confirmation from her owner and forgot.  I mentioned we had planned this and had the email confirmation as you can see below.  There was no other form of communication till we arrived.  She went back on her word and I told her I was disappointed. I asked if we could get in contact with the owner to ask and between her and the chef, they were very rude to us.  She told us to sit and pay for our meal.  It wasn't about the money at all but more about the rude attitude and them going back on their confirmation.

We were customers and working with the media trying to help them and there is no place for anyone to be rude to us.  There were only a few people in the restaurant and one of the customers came to defend us as they began to yell at us to get out because I just asked to speak to the owner.  This server Sharon was out of line and made a mistake.  However, she continued to send emails to me and try to hurt our publication.  She went above her means and I tried to contact the owner but to no resolution.  Sharon is the only one ever to complain about me in our 16 yrs in business so this needed to get addressed here.

Perhaps the owner should have been talking to me about customer service and how to handle situations instead of allowing a server to be rude and be negative towards us.  I would never go back and suggest others stay away from this restaurant that obviously doesn't know how to deal with customers.

We cover many travel and dining destinations and provide great positive features.  We even provide positive publicity on events and charities (some we attend and others we don't).  You can check over a thousand stories on our website to see the positive publicity we provide and we are on top search engines including the #1 page of google on quite a few articles.

Would love to host you for a review! My name is Sharon, I'll be the server in the 30th.

another ccnewspaper.com complaint

AUTHOR: mistreated food server - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, October 14, 2016

As you can see from the complete email exchange Todd has been dishonest in his claim that I confirmed and we no communication after that.

I asked him how many people we would be hosting and he told me two adults and two very small children. I then told him I would get back to him asap the next day.

The next email is from him the morning he planned to arrive at our restaurant asking if I got confirmation as they would be arriving that afternoon. I never saw or answered that email. He then showed up with his family at our restaurant wanting to know if I got confirmation.

I apologized to him directly for forgetting to get the confirmation. I told him it wasn't fair to give the owner bad pr when it was my fault and he said he knew that. He told our chef that he was going to put his name in the bad pr too for asking him to leave and he did just that. He posted a negative review on yelp that was untrue.

After he left I assumed we were done with him but he posted the review on yelp and after I responded to his review he yet again emailed me with more insults and untruths which can all be seen by the dates.

That incident should not have led to him writing an untrue negative review of our business when all I did was forget to confirm that he and his family could have free dinner in exchange for positive pr on his website. He then took his family to another restaurant for dinner a few minutes away for free or not I don't know and included them in his travel piece...should have been no harm no foul. Nothing more than a very, very, minor inconvenience to him which could have been completely avoided had he called our restaurant in advance since he got no reply from me to his email asking for confirmation.

I absolutely cannot believe that he blew a minor few minutes worth of inconvenience to him that was his own fault into what he has. It was his extreme over reaction to what happened and his dishonesty that made me file the report and yet he still refuses to let it go or tell the truth. He didn't respond to my report until almost a year later.

He also claimed that his publication hasn't had any other complaints or something along those lines but here is another report filed on it: http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/ccnewspapercom/-internet-/ccnewspapercom-coast-to-coast-newspaper-boycott-ccnewspapercom-boycott-coast-to-coast-n-1160843.

setting the record straight on who is being dishonest

AUTHOR: mistreated food server - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 05, 2016

Mr. Elliot claims that I was being dishonest and that we at Mt. Top Cafe were being rude to him when it was actually the other way around.

He has committed libel against myself and the restaurant I work at and I can prove it. I have not been dishonest about anything that happened.

He has been dishonest about the confirmation for dinner and our email exchanges. Here is what actually transpired via email and you can see that I never responded with confirmation before he showed up.

He also claims he never threatened bad pr and I also have proof in his own words that he did just that in emails that he continued to send me after he showed up at our restaurant.

I never told him to stay and pay, I told him that the owner said he could either wait for her return or come back another time and he chose to leave.

The emails at the bottom of the page are the ones he sent me after he was at our restaurant. They can be read in order by date.

I apologized more than once to you and I said we would love to have you until you made clear the meal for your entire family would be free. I didn't have the authority to confirm that and I did make an honest mistake in forgetting about it, for which I apologized. Most people would have called ahead to confirm before showing up. We don't need publicity, we have a loyal customer base and do just fine without a write up on some website I've never heard of. I had four tables at the time and then we filled every table after you left. The grizzly does well because it's actually in the town of wrightwood close to Mt. High. Everything I said in my yelp response was true and you trying to turn this situation around on us is ridiculous.

PS- I think you should come to your senses.  Perhaps you are the one pulling the scam as maybe you thought we would come in for dinner, pay for it and then write a nice review for you with free advertising with our publication.  How selfish?   I have a few new years resolutions for you.  If you mess up, just apologize and don't get defensive. If you have the authority to write to me like you did, the owner should know as you are adding fuel to the fire. Remember anything you write here gives me permission to quote and print so don't be so stupid.   oh yeah, thank you SO MUCH for getting my daughter a glass of water. I hope that didn't put you out too much with the empty restaurant and only few other customers there.  One of the parties came to my defense so perhaps I will share what you wrote with them as they gave me their contact info and were appalled to hear how Frank was rude to me.  I did make a mistake as I said 99% of our reviews are positive. It is more like 99.9% so that should tell you something about how we aim to provide positive pr.
You are the one that screwed up, not me so engaging in this is terrible instead of owning up and saying sorry.   Let's see how bad your communication was.  #1- I emailed a request to host us for a review. You confirmed us via email.  #2-  You calling us a scam when you could have turned us down would have been fine. Sounds like you are trying to cover up for your mistake.  #4- You forgot to ask the owner even though I explained how we work and didn't communicate back with me.  #3- You said I was impatient but had no exact time when the owner was coming. Just that they are coming from Victorville and expect us to wait or just eat and pay.  That is nice of you to tell me what to do and tell me to wait but not sure how long as we were driving back almost 2 hrs.    #4- If you did turn us down originally, we could have covered another restaurant as part of our feature story but you didn't.  #5- You assume that I write bad stuff if I don't get free stuff. NO, it is all about communication.  We don't cover all requests and are turned down for media stories but very rare for someone to confirm us and then not come through. If you were not sure what hosting us for a review, that is not my fault. Or maybe you just want money and free advertising.  I wouldn't need to request anything upfront then, duh? I could just eat there and review it.  #6- The owner's friend was on the phone for longer than one minute as I thought she was telling her a long story.  #7- Frank was very rude. He could have tried to resolve this or even talk to me nicer as you inconvenienced us even though I was upfront after confirming and then having a memory lapse to follow up and communicate with me either way.  All of that is the truth so I will leave it in your hands now and hope you do the right thing upon your reply.  I will for sure follow up on all of this as you didn't tell the truth in your comment back to me on yelp. Oh yeah, you FORGOT (again) to mention that you confirmed me via email first.  It is ok as you can argue with me as long as you want.  it is NO SURPRISE that the Grizzly Café was packed with a wait list and your place had 4 people in it.   You could have used some good pr instead acting like you did.

Sincerely,

Todd Elliot

Such a joke and no problem for me to add more negative stuff from your terrible behavior and inappropriate communication. Try looking up the word hosting in a dictionary. Also, you are so wrong about is I cannot even begin to explain as 99% of our reviews are positive and only on situations like this would I put up anything bad. We were up to do a story and it is fine to truth is down if you are not interested bit yes you did confirm is on your dec  28 email.  Maybe you forgot again   So when we wrote something bad it has to be terrible.  I asked how long it would take for the owner to come in and you said you didn't know. Now you tell me I was impatient and she arrived ten minutes later
Wow, you are just making things worse and I will be happy to engage if you like spreading the word about this.  I will check with your owner to see if she agrees with your practices here and sarcasm.  Good luck

I admitted that I forgot, I didn't confirm that your family would receive a free dinner and the owner was only a few minutes away, that's what we told you and she did show up ten minutes later. Your family could have waited inside and been fed at your expense. This is ridiculous and you were the rude demanding one. Your family could have been fed in the time it took you to go to the other restaurant. The owner's friend barely speaks English and she wasn't talking to her for more than a minute trying to explain to her your situation when I'm not even sure she understood what you wanted. Terrible business practice, give us free stuff or we write badly about you. I only confirmed before I knew you wanted free dinner for your family...quite the scam, was your entire ski day for your family paid for by others? The chef escorted you out because you were the one that was rude and drawing the negative attention of paying customers. I even gave your daughter a cup of water. You had no patience and could have just paid for your family's dinner and forgone any positive pr on your website like any other customer. Do you get all of your free products and services under the threat of bad press? I read your bad pr on yelp you gave us for not giving your family free dinner on the spot, at least if you're going to write something negative be truthful about it, that was not truthful. Oh wait, if you were truthful there would be nothing negative to say because our staff did nothing wrong.

Gotta say you dropped the ball yesterday Sharon after confirming us. That put us out as we could have covered another place. Your chef or whomever that was named Frank was very rude to me so I documented that.  I would suggest checking first before confirming per your email below and then messing us up and then not following through. Bad reviews and rude workers are not good for any places.  Asking me to wait till the owner showed up when we were in touch before and my 2 little daughters were hungry and we needed to drive back to LA was ridiculous since we had no idea when the owner was coming.  I feel you should have stepped up to the plate since you made a mistake and asked the Asian lady to give you the phone to explain to the owner the situation. The Asian lady was on the phone for about 5 minutes (it is not that long of a discussion so not sure what they could have been talking about).  Oh well, that is the way it goes and negative publicity coming.

Sincerely,

Todd Elliot
