I ordered my wife an ounce of Shalimar perfume ($330.16), a favorite of many years, from Neiman Marcus on line. When I gave it to here on our anniversary, she was delighted.
She opened the sealed plastic wrap, opened the box, looked for a moment, and then commented that there was neither a Shalimar label on the bottle nor the usual wax seal on the stopper. Nevertheless, she opened the bottle, and put some on -- and then looked really puzzled: there was virtually no scent at all, and what there was didn't smell remotely of Shalimar. Color me embarrassed, and then very annoyed.
I returned the bottle the next day to the local NM (The Shops at Willow Bend, Plano, TX). They refunded my money, with no particular sense of surprise, just passively agreeing that it was not Shalimar, or indeed, any perfume at all.
Had this been a gift sent to a girlfriend in some remote location who was unfamiliar with the particular perfume, I wonder if she would have just accepted it with a shrug while pondering my lousy taste (oh -- and still attend my funeral when my wife found out).
I requested compensation for my inconvenience and embarrassment, and was assured by the customer service manager Pamela somebody-or-other that I would be contacted store manager Deb McGinnis by yesterday. Silence.
I am not suggesting this was a NM scam -- but it's also hard to imagine how they acquire fake perfume. And the attitude at the customer service desk suggests either remarkable equanimity, or that similar events aren't all that rare.
Caveat emptor.

NOTTHE NEIMAN-MARCUS STORE I GREW UP WITH! SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG HERE --IF IT IS TRUE!
AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

THIS IS A DISGRACE AND A SHAME UPON A ONCE-HONORABLE AND ONE HUNDRED CENT GREAT FAMILY BUSINESS! IF IT IS TRUE AND IF IT WAS THE REAL NEIMAN-MARCUS WEBSITE AND NOT A COUNTERFEIT.
YOU GOT WHAT YOU PAID FOR WHEN STANLEY MARCUS WAS IN CHARGE!
THIS SOUNDS LIKE A CHEAP ORGANIZED CRIME STUNT --THE OLD PERFUME HUSTLE WHERE THE GUYS COUNTERFEIT THE OUTSIDE PACKAGES OF THE NAME BRAND PERFUME,GET SOME SCHLOCK BOTTLES AND PUT GOD KNOWS WHAT IN THERE, SEAL IT UP SO IT IS EXTREMELY HARD TO OPEN FOR INSPECTION AND SELL IT THE SAME AS PERFUME IN PARKING LOTS, OUTSIDE AND INSIDE OF NIGHTCLUBS UNDER THE COVER OF DARKNESS OR SELL IT ANYWHERE ELSE PRETENDING THAT THEY HAVE TO SELL IT FAST BECAUSE IT IS STOLEN AND THE COPS CAN BUST THEM ANY SECOND BUT FOR YOU, THEY WILL SELL YOU THIS PERFUME FOR SUCH A SPECIAL DEAL!
THEY PREFER IT WHEN THE POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS ARE INTOXICATED OR ON DRUGS OR ARE OTHERWISE MESSED UP AND FLUSH WITH CASH BECAUSE THEY USUALLY WILL CHARGE WHAT THEY THINK YOU CAN PAY FOR THIS JUNK WITHOUT THINKING TOO LONG ABOUT IT AND WANTING TO INSPECT IT. THEY MIGHT EVEN HAVE SOME REAL PERFUME OR A GOOD IMITATION TO SHOW YOU TO CON YOU INTO THINKING YOU ARE GETTING THE REAL DEAL BUT BASICALLY THIS IS A HIT AND GIT OPERATION.
AND THEN THEY TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN AND THAT IS WHEN YOU FIGURE OUT YOU HAVE BOUGHT A COUNTERFEIT PACKAGE WITH JUST COLORED WATER IN AN UGLY BOTTLE.
GOTCHA!
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD EXPECT FROM SOME SLEAZY, CHEAP CON ARTISTS WHO RUN IN THE STREETS AND ALLEYS...
CERTAINLY NOT FROM A STORE THAT HAS BEEN WORLD-FAMOUS FOR LUXURY, HIGH-QUALITY MERCHANDISE FOR DECADES!!!!
I WONDER IF IT WAS A SCAM WEBSITE THAT WAS PHISHING AND PRETENDING TO BE NEIMAN MARCUS' WEBSITE BUT WAS FROM MIDDLE EASTERN OR RUSSIAN MAFIA SOURCES INSTEAD!
I FIND THIS VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A STORE THAT WORKS AS HARD ON ITS REPUTATION FOR LUXURY AND QUALITY GOODS AS THIS ONE HAS WOULD RISK LOSING THAT SORT OF REPUTATION WITH THAT SORT OF CHEAP STUNT!
STANLEY MARCUS WOULD NOT HAVE WANTED THIS TO HAPPEN
STANLEY MARCUS WAS A MARKETING GENIUS, AN AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT PERSON, A BON VIVANT, AND HE WAS GOOD TO HIS EMPLOYEES TOO -- NOT ONLY HIS RETAIL PEOPLE BUT THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED IN HIS HOME.EVEN PEOPLE WHO WAITED ON HIM IN VARIOUS LOCAL RESTAURANTS. HE WAS THE VERY BEST OF JUDAISM -- HE WAS A MENSCH.
THE EXTREMELY FEW TIMES I SAW, IT WAS LIKE LOOKING AT ELISHA AND MOSES. BEING IN THE PRESENCE OF THE KING. HE WAS A GOOD PERSON.MAY HIS MEMORY BE BLESSED.
I WONDERED WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO HIS FAMILY'S NAMESAKE ULTRA-LUXURY EMPORIUM WHEN HE SOLD IT AND IT BECAME A NATIONAL CHAIN FOR RICH PEOPLE ONLY.
Steal from Stanley Marcus' CUSTOMERS???? NO WAY IN HELL!
I guess you answered my question and it is not much different than what always happens when a successful, spectacular local business goes national and you get a bunch of folks who only care about the bottom line. What worked in Dallas in the way of compensation and extra customer service has now become something the scammers can use to enrich themselves and their cronies at the expense of the good name and good will of the company and as long as the accountants and other financial people don't check the statements very close, I imagine life will be good for them.
But I guess according to the new employment rules, anybody who is loyal to the company is a fool ---especially since they have so many creative ways of getting rid of you, denying you your retirement ( or trying to), denying you benefits and the other things they do that do not encourage long-term employment either. The old Neiman-Marcus was the kind of place where loyality and great service was valued as was honesty, hard work and honest salesmanship.
It's like a basket of fruit. The more hands reaching in and taking fruit out without putting any back will soon result in an empty basket and that won't make any money for anyone unless it is a liquidation sale.
The Marcus idea was a GREAT one but with this sort of smallness and crabbling for scraps and so many imitators, I sadly sense that this wonderful store with its wonderful tradition may become a thing of the past. SADLY.
Nobody cares about a family business like the family and since the family sold out I don't know if they know or care these days.
So sad.
BY THE WAY, HERE IS WHAT INTERNET MERCHANTS' NEWSLETTER HAS TO SAY ABOUT THE NEIMAN-MARCUS WEBSITE:
Multichannel Merchant News Live From Internet Retailer: Neiman Marcus on Making a Good Site Experience Better
Live From Internet Retailer: Neiman Marcus on Making a Good Site Experience Better
Jan 20, 2009 1:24 PM,
Miami -- For high-end retailer Neiman Marcus, it's all about the merchandise. But how you present that merchandise and engage the customer online is critical, according to Lindy Rawlinson, vice president of Web operations and new business for Neiman Marcus Direct.
Delivering a keynote address at Internet Retailer's Web Design conference here on Jan. 20,2009 Rawlinson noted that before you undergo a Website redesign, you have to understand your customer. You also have to make sure that whatever you do keeps that customer engaged.
It's best to make small changes and enhancements, Rawlinson said: "Don't do too much too quickly." And make sure you test, she added. "The Web allows you to do this easily."
Neiman Marcus Direct is a big fan of A/B testing, Rawlinson said, and conducts these types of tests whenever it can. "Sometimes what you think is the better [site] layout doesn't always win," she noted.
The retailer has made several tweaks to its Neiman Marcus site, includeing launching a new search engine and adding guided navigation features for its sales items in spring 2008. And it spent the next few months analyzing the results and making changes, Rawlinson said.
The company recently redesigned its Bergdorf Goodman Website. Among the changes: It widened the site to allow for larger images (which it had done for the Neiman Marcus site this past fall); it moved the store section to the top of the Website; and put the video and fashion blogs all in one area in a prominent position on the site, Rawlinson said.
It did not make radical changes, however. Rawlinson said you should never underestimate the power of familiarity--even if you think you can improve something, keep in mind that your customers know how to use it as it is. "We don't want to do anything that will disrupt the shopping experience for our customer," Rawlinson said.
DOES IT GUARANTEE YOU THAT THE PRODUCTS YOU ORDER FROM HERE WILL BE AUTHENTIC OR EVEN THE SAME AS WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE PAYING FOR?
THAT IS THE QUESTION!
AND IF STANLEY MARCUS WAS STILL ALIVE AND STILL IN CHARGE, THAT ANSWER WOULD BE AN UNQUALIFIED, ONE THOUSAND PERCENT "YES!"
I STILL THAT THAT SOMEBODY COUNTERFEITED A NEIMAN-MARCUS WEBSITE AND TOOK IN A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY BEFORE THEY EITHER SHUT DOWN THE SITE OR WERE ARRESTED -- AND THIS SORT OF FRAUD WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN KEPT QUIET AND PROSECUTED DISCREETLY.
