Olsen Shaner/N.A.R Northern American Recovery Insane amount of fees and interest on a $60 debt Salt Lake City Utah

A collections account of $115 showed up on my husband’s credit report a couple of months ago. It was for a $60 copay for a doctor’s office that they didn’t collect at time of service, and then sent the bill to an old address. We never got it. No big deal, we called the number on the credit report to get it taken care of. The number was for N.A.R. They redirected us to the Attorney’s office; Olson Shaner, stating they couldn’t take the payment and we would have to work with them. When we called the number N.A.R provided the recording referenced a website that we could make the payment on. Cool. We went to the website, and it was a jewelry store. What the??? Back to square one.

We called N.A.R again, and kept getting the run around so we dropped it for a couple weeks. When we called Olsen Shaner again about 2 weeks ago, we finally got a real live person, however we were then informed the debt had gone from $115 to $468?!?! My husband tried to get them to take a settlement, they said no. He then asked for paperwork that he signed that showed he would pay over 7x the amount of the original debt. They said they would mail it…still waiting on that document. My husband decided to call back the same day and was put in touch with another lady who said her coworker was mistaken and that they would take a settlement. This was a Friday. She told us the paperwork would be sent to my husband and she would call the next week. The paperwork came, the call did not. On the paperwork it shows the debt now upwards of $556, but they would settle for $500. We called again today, now we are back to dealing with N.A.R who is representing themselves as Olson Shaner, to try and get the settlement decreased and get it taken care of. We were informed that they were not going to reduce the amount and that they would setup a payment plan, but that they were going to still enforce an accrual of 18% per day interest. How is this legal???? All we tried to do from the day we found out the debt existed was pay it, and now we've succumbed to this; complete frustration and no resolution.
