Yep these people are absolute charlatans. They have tried the same with me (i.e threatening and abusive phone calls). They also state that they can only deal with you on the phone and will not communicate via letter or email. They are a VERY nasty bunch and employ bullying tactics to try to get you to hand over money you don't have.

To the Original Poster - here is what you and your friend do about these people.

1) Do NOT take their calls. This is harrassment and you do not have to tolerate it.

2) Draft a letter to them telling them not to call you and to only correspond with you in writing. Advise them that any further calls will be taken as willful harrassment on their part and will result in you reporting them to the Office of Fair Trading, the Financial Ombudsman and the Comsumer Credit Association (who I believe they are licensed by check your agreement).

3) Advise them that any attempt on their part to contact your employer or anyone else to discuss your account is a direct breach of the Data Protection Act 1998 and will gain force you to complain to all of the above authorities.

Do NOT be intimidated by these people. Regardless of where they are based or what they tell you they ARE subject to UK law and as such there is very little they can do you if you are reasonable with them.

Best of luck. Tell your friend to dry her tears and grit her teeth. Stand up to them and they HAVE to back off or risk losing their UK license.
