I purchased an 8-week "boot camp" and "personal training" session for Private Workout on Groupon.  Their various references to "boot camps" and "classes" are completely false.  What it actually consists of is self-guided circuit training for 25 minutes through various machines.

On your first appointment date the seemlingly annoyed "trainer" shows you how to go through the circuit training equipment.  That is your personal training session.  Then they continue with high pressure sales tactics getting you to join the gym and pay the monthly fee.  I had not completed or even started my 8-week boot camp, and I was told I had to decide on the spot if I wanted to join the gym after my 8-week boot camp was over.  No test week or so, I had to decide then and there. If I didn't join at that time, they would not waive the $200 membership fee in the future.

I told the representative that I did not feel comfortable joining a gym before I even had 1 workout on my own, and did not not appreciate being pressured to make an instant decision.  The representative then proceeded to insult me by telling me that I must not be serious about getting in shape and losing weight. I was ridiculous for passing up this "fantastic" offer.

Even if you join on the spot, if you ever cancel before you hit 100 visits to the facility, you are automatically charged the $200 membership fee. That's where they catch you.

There are no "classes" or "camps". As I mentioned, it is a self-guided 25 minute tour through circuit training equipment.  The same routine every single time with no variation.  How could someone not get bored with this? The incentive to join a class or a camp is that you have an instructor with you the entire time for motivation, and the workouts change.  At Private Workout you are alone and the workout is the same each and every time.

It is deceptive that they boast classes and camps. This is not the case. There are DTPA claims (the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act) all over this - mispresentation of quality,  characteristics, terms, and facts surrounding the services provided. I am sure I could find other causes of action if I looked up the Act again.

They are also stretching the definition of "personal training session". The representative just follows you from room to room and watches you do the exercises - the exact same exercises each and every time.

Customer service is nil to none.  I am quite disturbed groupon, living social, and possibly other discount sites still promote these facilities.

Finish the Boot Camp you will love the results!

Thanks for your comment and the opportunity for us to clear of some misconceptions…

Private Workout enjoys an A rating with the BBB of Dallas and a 99.4% customer satisfaction rating by our over 12,000 customers.  We take every complaint seriously and would like to address some the things said in this one…

“Boot camps” are programs where you learn a lot, or accomplish a lot in a short period of time, being instructed when to change multiple activities.  On the internet it’s easy to find Sales Boot Camps, Social Media Boot Camps, Research Boot Camps, Outdoor Fitness Bootcamps, and Indoor Fitness Bootcamps which is what we offer. Our indoor bootcamp offers 14 different exercises during a 25 minute workout where an instructor tells you when to change, so things change often.

Military bootcamps, according to Dr. Kenneth Cooper of The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, formerly Surgeon General of the U. S. Air Force, and developer of the U. S. Military fitness assessment test, are designed to develop stamina, so no soldier holds up the troop.  They are designed to make people shed pounds: both fat AND muscle.  People with too much muscle can hold up the troop just as a soldier with too much fat might.  If two men weighing 220 lbs join the Army, one from the band, one from the football team, they will each weight 186 when the boot camp is done… one loses fat, one loses muscle.

Unfortunately, the average male and female lose up to 1 lb of fat burning muscle per year after age 20, so according to Dr. Cooper, outdoor bootcamps will only accelerate that muscle loss, lowering their metabolism even faster than without it.  Lower metabolism means your body burns fewer calories per day than before, so if you eat the same, you gain more fat.  Therefore to restore a fit body, muscle must be RESTORED not burned off, so we offer the kind of workout done by most professional athletes in Football, Basketball, Hockey, and Baseball. It’s called a weight circuit.  This workout was designed by two Cambridge University professors who proved you can develop muscle and strength faster than with free weights and you get better cardio that working out on cardio equipment.  So instead of causing the average boot camp person to slow down their metabolism, we speed it up.

Can all these professional sports teams and athletes be wrong?  When Dr, Cooper initiated the military fitness test in 1966, the U. S. Army sent thousands of soldiers back to their own boot camps to get them prepared to pass the test… but most failed!  Why? they lost too much muscle!  Now the Army, like the pro athletes, do workouts similar to ours to restore the muscle…  Since the Army gave up outdoor bootcamps for older soldiers over 47 years ago, why should you do one today?

We should make one thing clear, we do offer PRIVATE workouts (like the name!) where no one watches you workout. This is the opposite of a large class doing “one size fits all” workout routines designed to make you lose weight by losing fat and muscle.  You will be working out at the same time as others but you won’t see them, and they won’t see you.  Our workouts are individualized for you to progress at your own speed, not the speed of the class.  Our workouts are a combination of resistance training and cardio designed to keep your heart rate at over 120 bpm in order to lower your risk of heart attack by 58%, restore 10 lbs of muscle in as little as 3 months to restore your metabolism to someone in the 20 year old range, and burn up to 600 calories in a 25 minute workout, losing up to a pound every 6 workouts.  But you MUST complete the program to get those results so DON’T QUIT EARLY!

On the first visit, we explain the workout process, form fit each machine to your specific shape, teach you the proper form of the exercise, give you a workout sheet that has been improved over 50 times since we opened in 2003 by our Certified Personal Trainers, provide mirrors for you to perfect your form, and make recommendations for the amount of protein you need to be successful in this program.  Did your last gym do all this?

Our personal trainers are paid on salary, and are not the full-commission sales people found in most gyms, so there is no pressure to buy from them.  In fact, we have sold well over 5,000 Groupons and we show each person before they ever arrive for their first  workout that they have three choices for enrollment: 1) do their boot camp and quit, 2) do their bootcamp then join a month-to-month plan for $199 down, $33 per month, or 3) trade their 6 week or 8 week bootcamp for 8 weeks of a month to month program where we suspend the enrollment fee until they complete 100 workouts or cancel.  If they complete the 100 workouts, we waive it, if they cancel, we don’t.  This program has inspired thousands of people to workout many more workouts than they would have done at normal gyms, especially since the statistics show that 97% of people going to normal gyms quit within the first 13 weeks, and 99% by the end of the first year.  What’s more, those that finish the Fitness Race 100 not only have their enrollment fee waived, we drop their monthly rate to $3 per month!  You have to workout to get fit anywhere, we are just the only gym that rewards you for workouts!  What does your gym offer?

We allow all customers a couple of days to choose the last option, called the Fitness 100, but Groupon and Living Social require them to use their full coupon on the first visit, so if they want to trade them in and get credit for the two months, that has to be done the first day.  Otherwise, they can enroll in that program a couple of days later, or wait until the bootcamp is over to do the normal program.  All this can be found on our
web site at http://privateworkout.com/id277.html

Ok, let’s talk about her comment about being bored…  Many people feel a workout must be entertaining or it has no value.. unfortunately, most “entertaining” workouts show little results.  We are a science based gym producing a workout that exceeds the results of every “fun” workout, and yet it only takes 25 minutes.  Yoga is a very popular exercise that some consider fun, but according to webmd.com, it burns around 95 calories for a 200lb person, it gets the heartrate to around 65 bpm, and does not build muscle since it is a body weight exercise and focuses mainly on “slow-twitch” muscle fibers, that grow in stamina, but not in size. It takes around 37 workouts to lose a pound, now that is what we call BORING!  We plan club music here and can drop a lb in as little as 6 workouts, now that is FUN!

If you only had 30 minutes to workout, would you rather burn 95 calories or up to 600?  Not restore muscle or restore up to 10 lbs in 3 months?  Get your heart rate to 65bpm or 155bpm?  Please review this for more info on different workouts:  http://www.privateworkout.com/id224.html

Final word here:  You have to read the full book to know the ending so please do 100 of your workouts and you will be singing our praises!
