Worse than spam!

AUTHOR: Lorraine - Geek Consumer Advocate :-) - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 02, 2006

I'm so sorry. I originally thought you were talking about spam emails. Then I saw a report filed shortly after yours about this same company and I knew something wasn't right. I just did research and below is a paste of what I compiled about them. If you did fill out their cancel form, PLEASE read all of what I am putting below and protect yourself.

--------

I saw a report tonight about this voicemail service and the poster said it came via an email and said a prize would be won for playing games. After the games were played, then you are informed you are signed up for this voicemail service and there is a link given if you want to opt out. While that person may have succeeded in filling it out, it seems others were not as other reports are being filed.

I at first thought it was just spam email, then I saw more reports and I started doing some research. This is a bad company and they are putting charges that range from 15 to 30 dollars a month on phone bills for their 'service' people haven't ordered nor wanted. This is bad.

Below is what I found on them and I hope it can be of some help to you in protecting yourself from them. PLEASE check your phone bill monthly when it comes in to make sure it is correct and they have not slammed it and put charges on it.

Contact Information

Customer Service Phone Number

Customer Service hours are:

Email Address
CUSTOMERSERVICE@RESIDENTIALVOICEMAIL.COM

I went to other links I found in a google search (http://www.idtcreative.net/DMI/3.9/index6.php) I found their Corporate information for the main company behind the residentialvoicemail website, who will be the name that shows up on your phone bill as giving you service.

Corporate Information

Fred Lloyd
Vice President, Strategic Planning
ILD Telecommunications, Inc.
5000 Sawgrass Village Circle, Suite 30
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082
Office: (904) 273-2440
Tollfree: 1(800)433-4518
Fax: (904) 285-3616
Email: fred.lloyd@ildmail.com

Their residentialvoicemail.com website gives the following info on their pages:

Their cancel section on their site looks more like a way to harvest more phone numbers to slam to me after people follow the link they got in email:

Cancel Account

Please Enter Your Telephone Number and Email Address

Telephone Number

Email Address

I would suggest NOT giving them your phone number. They won't have it if they have only emailed you, but they will if you try to cancel using this method. Then they just match up the phone number with the email they sent you and it all will look legit. I believe that is how they are getting the numbers and then charging these unwanted fees for their unrequested service each month.

--------

Pricing

After your first FREE 30 DAYS of service, the low monthly fee of only $19.95 will automatically be billed on your local telephone bill.

In order to program and activate your service, and to ensure proper message delivery, there is also a one-time non-refundable set-up fee of only $24.95 which should appear on your next local telephone company bill in the Miscellaneous Charges section under Residential Voice Mail.

Service Description

Your Toll-Free Voice Mail will have its own separate toll-free number, and will give friends and family the ability to leave you messages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere in the continental U.S. without paying long distance charges.

BEST OF ALL, an audio copy of your messages will be emailed to you for your convenience.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Can you give more info?

I'm not quite sure from reading your report if you went to this company's website first or if they sent you unsolicited email and you then went to their site. I'm thinking they sent you email and you followed a link to play these so called games of theirs, then found out your 'prize' was getting their product, which you didn't want, for good reason.

This is the reason you should never reply to any emails you get from people you do not know. You were lucky by the way it sounds and all you lost is some of your time. Spam (unsolicited email) offers you all kinds of wonderful sounding things, but rarely are they what they seem. The results can vary from what you experienced, to getting a virus in your computer.

Please be careful in the future and don't respond to emails from names you don't know, companies you didn't request information from, or click on email attachments you didn't ask to be sent to you.
