About six months ago, I contacted Martin regarding my interest in VRBO property # 295549 (http://www.vrbo.com/295549) for early Feb 2012.

Martin urged me to quickly put down at deposit to hold the studio, so I gave him my credit card information over the phone and was told that I was all set.

One week prior to my Feb 1st, 2012 departure date, Martin sent me an email saying, "the apartment you originally booked has some owner issues and the best is if you stay in the following apt".  The alternate apt was far inferior so I asked what was the issue, and he replied: "In Brazil people tend to change things owners want to charge more even after a deposit was made months ago".  Then he gave me two more inferior options, and a fourth option that was similar to the property that I reserved but asked for about 50% more money for it.

Martin then made the following statements to justify the bait-and-switch:
"A lot can change in Brazil in 6 months."
"Rio is one of the most expensive cities in the world and you're paying a great price"
"You are coming to a 3rd world country please work with us a bit"
"Normally its 3 e-mails to confirm a booking, this is bit too much for a 5 night rental of a studio"

So I inquired several times and in various ways about having my deposit returned to me, and Martin eventually replied, "We pay the owners the deposits when we make the reservations, I can apply the deposit to another apartment however I am not able to refund you 6 months later, best is to get one of our apartments".  So it looks like Martin is unwilling to return my $175 deposit.

Deposit returned 2 yrs later without interest [with Threat]

AUTHOR: Al - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Money finally returned two years later, without interest or anything else to make up for all the stress and problems Martin caused me.  He refunded me under the condition that I would remove this report (something I cannot do even if I wanted to).  He then sent me a threatening email saying "I will use the same site to give you the worst possible image the same way you gave us".  See attached file containing Martin's email.  How is someone like this allowed to own and operate a fraudulent business?  Thank you ripoffreport.com for helping to expose guys like this!

Wow... Will the lies never end?

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by Rio Management's continued deceit.  As I mentioned originally, Martin charged my credit card six months before my trip, and only informed me one week before flying to Rio that the property was no longer available.  As Martin is well aware, credit card companies cannot dispute charges six months later.  If I were able to recoup my deposit, I would had never filed the report.  Martin made it very clear... Either stay at one of his inferior studios, or lose my deposit.  I actually chose to pay more at a reputable hotel rather than let a con-artist swindle me out of more money.

The individual who filed this claim ( undisclosed name and contact information) cancelled his reservation filed a *chargeback* through his credit card company, received his deposit money back and never stayed in one of our properties.  Our reputation is important to us and so is client satisfaction.  Rio Management would not jeopardize their reputation for a $175 usd.  Please contact us for a list of satisfied clients who used our services and a reference of many positive client reviews.
Sincerely,
- Rio Management.
