I requested a service call on my Hitachi projection TV and the people sent out were not qualified. They were just delivery people. The two technicians sent out looked at the TV and stated that it would need a new green projector. They called back to they shop and then gave me an estimate of $550 to repair the set. I told them that I didn't want to spend that much and then I paid them for the service call. I continued to research the problem on the internet. I downloaded a service manual for the set and found the simple on site adjustment for my problem. I then called the owner, Earl, back to ask for a refund since the adjustment should have been done during the service call but since the people sent out were unqualified they had not done the adjustment. The owner, Ear,l said that he had incurred expenses by sending these people out and if I had let them take the set into the shop it would have been serviced by a qualified technician. I explained again that this option was not presented and the delivery guys represented themselves as technicians. The owner told me that they had been very busy that day and so he had sent the delivery/pickup team instead of a service technician. But he assured me that they had "picked up" diagnostic ability from working closely with the service technicians. I explained that I had expected qualified service technicians to come to work on my set and that I wanted a refund since that had not happened. The owner flatly refused my refund.

The problem the customer had was with his CRT. There are voltage adjustments on the front of the TV that can be adjusted, but 90% of the time, there is a serious malfunction in the circuits driving the CRTs. If you only adjust the knobs, there can be very serious consequences to adjusting. We never try to do a "quick fix" in the home. This can lead to damaged components, also more service calls, and parts failing due to overdriving.
We have no problem with people searching the internet for fixes on their TV. We get many calls from people with little or no training opening up their sets and trying to fix their problems. This actually helps our business.
The service call charge is for our technicians to come out to the home. They gave a fair estimate for the repair if parts need to be replaced. If in fact the components were free of defects, it is in our best interest to fix the unit in the most economical way possible.
If the fee was unfair or unjustified, the customer's credit card company would not have paid us for services rendered. Please review all of your options before you set up an appointment, have us drive out to your house and evaluate your TV. We are happy to serve, but there are costs involved.
