In Oct 2004, I bought my very first Saturn ever. It is a level 2 ION. Their reputation is for their customer service, and their cars are considered some of the safest, but they run like absolute crap. After 20k miles, I took my car in twice for warranty repairs. 1st time, the ignition had to be replaced, the second time, some sway bar had to be repaired because it was knocking. Just after my warranty expired, a major repair has to be done.

My car has 40k miles on it and the power steering no longer works. To make matters worse, it's a futuristic all-electronic state-of-the-art power steering system, that no longer works and it requires having the steering column replaced. $1100 job, 2.5 year old car, 40k miles. I still have 3.5 years to pay off this piece of crap. I should have bought a Japanese Car. The sales rep at Galpin Saturn told me Saturns are just as reliable as Honda's and Toyota's. That's a load of crap. I drove a 1992 Toyota Paseo to 250k miles, and my most expensive repair on it was $700, and that was at 130k miles.

I will never buy a Saturn again! If they want a positive and happy update on this complaint, they had better offer me an extended warranty to 100k miles for free! Because I bet if I even spend $1100 to get this issue corrected, another super-expensive repair will have to be made.

My very positive experience with Galpin Saturn.

About 5-6 years ago, I suddenly found myself in desperate need of a car. My beater Escort gave up the ghost, and my job required me to drive my own vehicle.

My girlfriend, whose credit was not bad, had just purchased a new Ion at Galpin Saturn Van Nuys about a month before, so we went back to the same salesman. Much to my regret, I can no longer remember his name. My credit at the time was fairly bad. I had only $1000 for a down. I told him my situation, and that I was hoping I might be able to get a used Saturn. He had none on the lot at the time. Instead of shaking his head and pushing another beater he couldn't get rid of and I couldn't afford, he made a couple calls, then took three hours to drive me to Galpin Saturn in Santa Clarita.

He showed me the loss-leader there, a low-mileage '98 SL2 at more than $500 below blue book. I ran a Carfax, and gave it a very thorough look over and drive. He was very patient through this. The Carfax showed it was a fleet car with no accidents. Fleet-car to me means it'd had it's maintenance.

Even with a co-signer, the loan didn't go through. So he dropped the price until it did. I doubt he made a dime off the sale, and he invested a lot of his time.

I admit, I'm terrible at maintenance. I have neglected the car woefully, while putting over 100,000 miles on it in traffic, hills, and bad road conditions. It has to date needed no major repairs except for a valve-cover gasket. It's never been in a shop overnight since I bought it. I confess that once I ran it dry till it seized at 35mph. Dead locked-up. I thought it was scrap. Five quarts of oil later, it cranked almost immediately. It has run just as well as ever from that day, over three years and 40,000 miles ago. It uses a little more oil, but not much. Even the suspension is still good, despite the horrible LA road conditions.

I find it difficult to even consider ever buying anything but another Saturn, and I assure you that I will go directly to Galpin.

Obviously you did not do your research

Saturn USED to be known for their customer service and good cars, many years ago. Their reliability, dependability, and service ratings have substantially dropped in the last 5 years. Saturns are now some of the least recommended cars on the market for their many problems. Too bad you did not do your research before buying one.

But this hardly qualifies as a rip off. No one held a gun to your head and forced you to buy a Saturn. You made the decision to do so based on your own free will. This amounts to your personal irresponsibility. Perhaps you should take more care in making such significant decisions in the future.
