The following is for anyone who is considering a position at the Salt Lake City branch of Sears Home Improvement:

I was hired for a "Project Consultant" position at Sears earlier this year. My Job description was to sell home improvement products (ie: Kitchens, windows, siding, heat and air).

Keith the manager, who we will refer from here on as "K", seemed like a very nice outgoing guy. He made the job sound irresistable, in fact I actually felt like I was interviewing him by the end of the interview, because he was so desperate for sales people.

I was severely misleaded:

1-He said that my appointments would be mostly in Salt Lake and seldomly stretch to Provo or Ogden.
(REALITY- on average I drove between 600-1000 miles PER WEEK with no mileage reimbursement! "K" was very passive-aggressive and a huge ego-maniac, which meant if you were on his bad side you would be getting the worst leads and driving more than anyone else that week. I routinely went to Logan, Nephi, Tooele, and Heber)

2-He also said that the AVG rep makes between $80,000 and $100,000.
(REALITY- Apparently even none of the veteran reps had ever made that much in this branch, including the managers)

3-I was promised 3 or 4 leads per day.
(REALITY- I was lucky to get 1 or 2 per day. The way Sears qualifies the leads is a whole different story.)

4-He said I would have 2 full weeks of training.
(REALITY- "K" hap-hazardly trained our class for 3 days with no structure, often going off on tangents about how great a salesman he is, old war stories, etc. This is when I started to see the real him.

After half of the class quit within the few days, a young (too young) assistant manager took over. Still no structure or professional training material, but he was at least straight forward with the little he did teach. He told us what to expect for driving distances, commissions, etc. All of which contradicted what "K" promised us.

On top of all this, add the poorly trained contractors, and pointless meetings every Tuesday and Thursdays where the manager embarrassed other sales reps and rambled for hours.

In my short time at Sears Home Improvement I saw over 10 people come and go. Most of them listed "K" and his as a contributing factor as to why they quit.

All in all, Sears and their products are great and have great warranties. It is my opinion that this branch should be shut down and re-built with qualified people. Please do not get "sold" into working for this guy in the salt lake branch

WoW!

First of all let me say I am sorry you have had this bad experience.  My husband has been with SEARS Home Improvement products for a little over 6 years now here in Arizona.  He made exactly what you were quoted for the first 3 years or so and then as the economy have tanked he has made less obviously.  I think with all sales postions and commission only for sure you are going to have good weeks and bad weeks.  It also depends on the kind of salesman you are  etc.  This kind of job is not for everyone.  I gues sthe best thing I could say is if you are going to dao any kind of commission only sales you need to make sure you have money in the bank for the bad times.  Again I am sorry your training and all the other issues were there, we do not see those here.

are you kidding! Get there at 9am. Sit and do nothing until 10:30, train for an hour, leave for lunch and be back around 1pm. Sit around until 2:30ish, train for a bit, and then they cut out early at 4ish.

Oh the only thing I would have to disagree with is that the product is "not good quality." Although, I sold only kitchen reface and remodel. Product is inferior, installation is untimely and poor. Sure Sears' warranty is great... if they backed it up. It is truly just a false sense of security we unfortunately believed to be true while out there selling away and getting a lot of nothing in return. I feel most for the customers who bought from me because at the time I truly believe in the product, service, etc. I quickly learned otherwise.
