I was completely stupid, I fell for it. I signed up for 30 monthly installments of $27.60 for magazine subscriptions. 2 magazines for 12 months each and 1 for 60 months. I tried to cancel and was told that "it's too late" and "you signed a contract." I would send payment, they wouldn't receive it in time, so they'd charge my credit card AND cash the check I sent.
I haven't received any magazines in the last 6-9 months and had to tell my bank that I "lost" my debit card so they couldn't get anymore money.

Today, I filed a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I suggest that if you've been scammed by them, too that you do the same. Don't bother with the company. They'll lie!!

Southeastern Family Publishers stoop to new low in fraud and deception

AUTHOR: Lindsay - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 28, 2006

I sent the company a letter stating why I wasn't paying them. Then filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB can't help me because they say that despite a reasonable attempt by the company to resolve the issue, the customer remained dissatisfied. This is complete crap. The company did not make a reasonable effort. In their response to the BBB (which came after the deadline for the BBB and they were about to close the case because the company didn't respond), they never addressed the solution I was looking for.

Of course the customer remained dissatisfied. Any who....this is the real update. June 2006 I started mysteriously getting 3 magazines in the mail that I don't subscribe to. My first thought, was "Ok, SEF, you can't just throw magazines at me and expect this to go away." But then I figured that was ridiculous. Wrong! I contact each of the 3 magazines to find out who signed me up. They told me National Publishers Exchange (beware of them too!). I contacted NPE and was told that an order was placed in my name FOR 6 SUBSCRIPTIONS BY SOUTHEASTERN FAMILY PUBLISHERS!!!!

If any of you out there have had a similar experience, please let me know or write about it on this site. Also, file a complaint with the BBB. Right now, I'm consulting a lawyer friend to find out if what they did constitutes fraud and whether or not I have any legal leg to stand on.
