We leased a credit card machine from Northern Leasing in 2001.  The lease was satisfied in 2005 and they stopped charging our account the monthly fee.  The lease at that time was bogus enough, but we blindly signed it (hindsight is 20/20) and there was no way out of the lease.

Lesson learned and we though that was the end of it, until today.  We were charged $103.92 from SKS Associates aka Northern Leasing....we were dumbfounded...as were many other people on this site.  We did not receive the letter of warning others have received.  I called the company twice this morning already.  Both times I asked for an itemized listing of my payments and a specific description of what taxes I owe.  The first agent only faxed a copy of our lease.  The second agent has yet to fax anything.

I am just bewildered at the fact it has been over 5 years since we returned the credit card machine and they are just now charging my account.  Both agents I spoke with assured me there is no statute of limitations and it was perfectly legal for them to charge our account without notification since we signed the original lease.

We were so ripped off with the lease in the first place, it makes me sick.  But this time it is just like opening an old scar to pour salt in it.  I was able to reverse the charge to our account because I caught it in time, however, I was told by an SKS Associates' agent that they will be sending me an invoice.  If the invoice is unpaid, it will be forwarded to collections.  I don't know if it is worth paying the $103.92 as to not mess up our credit report.

I am not sure how this company can continue to get away with their misleading and fraudulent practices.  I know if we tried to charge a customer for an error from 5 years ago, they would laugh at us or report us...furthermore, I would never attempt it.

I feel your pain...

AUTHOR: JennM - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, March 31, 2011

I posted a report yesterday and a follow up today and I've seen 18 new reports pop up since I posted my own.

I couldn't agree more with you on what a ripoff the original lease was.  We did it twice - once on a credit card terminal, once on a sign - the sign is what brought me here, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop on the terminal lease.  So yes, hindsight is 20/20 and I'm sure none of us in this predicament will get fooled again.

Let them invoice you.  I'm waiting for it.  I got the same song and dance you did on the phone with the company yesterday, and so did a fellow business owner local to me, whom I spoke with earlier today.

The burden of proof that you owe, is on them, and they are failing to satisfy that burden.  There are easy legal ways to deal with collection attempts at bogus debt and if they attempt to mess up your credit there are ways to deal with that too.  Don't be bullied any more.  I won't.

My bank provided me with the name of the bank where the account is that took my money.  I just sent them a polite email advising them of what's going on and suggested they visit this website to see what people are saying.

File complaints with the FTC, Attorney General, BBB and whomever else.  We can't just stand by and let this happen.  I've taken action already and I'm still working on other things.

We all work hard for our money and it's not right to have it stolen right out from under us.
