I recently purchased the "Red Light & Speed Trap Alerts" lifetime subscription from SpotItOut.com for my Garmin Nuv 3590.  This is a data set that installs on your navigation device (Garmin or TomTom) to alert you of specific locations where fixed speed cameras, speed traps, and red light cameras are located.

While the POIs installed correctly (the data is installed as points of interest), the product has performed poorly and not as advertised in the description.  While notifications do appear - they are often too late, or completely wrong.

While the listing of police car alerts is flexible and imprecise, the fixed camera list should be more accurate, but instead is completely useless.

For example, while driving through an area in Maryland that uses a large number of camera, I received a fixed camera alerts at several red lights in a row, but NONE of them had a camera installed.  Along the same route, for the lights that did have fixed cameras, the device sounded an alert AFTER driving through the light.

Additionally, along the highway, the alert list continues to pop up in some spots 2-3 times consecutively, well after the vehicle has passed the point FOR needing any type of notification.

SpotItOut appears to know this is a problem. There is no customer support available on their site. Their warranty exempts them from any liability for any problem with the software at all. Despite what the warranty lists in its instructions - there is no link for a "CHAT" function, or a "support" section.

With no contact information listed for technical questions or purchase issues, it appears SpotItOut, LLC is intentionally avoiding taking responsibility for faulty products by making sure customers can not seek out an avenue for assistance or refunds.

The company says they provide lifetime updates - but a quick search of their social media sites shows no activity on Twitter since 2011, and one or two posts in the last 6 months on Facebook.  A single response to a perturbed customer references an email address for customer service, but that same address can not be found on their site.

The ripoff here is that the product being sold through online distribution - a direct download - is flawed.  They offer no support, no updates, and no way to contact them directly for refunds.  YET - despite what appears to be a company that has all but folded, they are continuing to sell the product for $75.

I do NOT recommend doing business with this company.

Company Response to Complaint

AUTHOR: jkb - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, November 20, 2012

After filing a report here, and pasting it to their Facebook page, I was directed to their email support address. I sent them a note almost identical to the complaint in this report and received the following response:

"Sir, Thank you for shopping Spot It Out. We have received your numerous messages. We are sorry to hear that you are not satisfied with the Red Light product. We have refunded your credit card for the full amount of the purchase. Regards, Spot It Out Customer Care"

I have also received a separate email notification that a full refund is being issued.

After this, I Googled the customer service email address and found the Customer Service page on their website - which contradicts my statement above that their site has no contact information.  You can not just click through to it from the first page, however. You must search for it through a search engine, but it does exist.

What this means, I believe, is that they want to strongly discourage contact through their website, not necessarily prevent it.  I can not think of another reason for making this information so difficult to locate.

Based on my use of this product and how it is presented, I still do not recommend this product.
