On September 22, 2008, I recieved a letter and a legitimate looking check for $3,998.85 from Stubhub telling me I had been randomly selected from a computerized ballot system as a winner for the 2nd quarter of 2008 Sweepstakes draw. The draw was supposedly "from Reader's Digest, Publisher's Clearing House, Online Sweepstakes, Internet Games, etc." I frequently enter Reader's Digest and Publisher's Clearing House Sweepstakes, and therefore, thought it was legitimate.
The letter told me to call my "agent, Norine McDonald or Maxine La" immediately for "authorization and activation" of the check "no later than September 29, 2008.
However, my cautious nature caused me to really study the envelope, check and letter. I found several inconsistancies, such as:
The address on the letter is 1199 Fremont, but on the check it is 199 Fremont;
The suite number on the letter is 90, but on the check it is 300;
The postmark is from Canada, not San Francisco;
The phone number in the letter is 514-691-6352, but on the check it is 450-369-0270.
When I called the number in the letter, around 6 p.m. CDT, they did not answer with a company name, but just said Hello. When I requested Norine or Maxine, they said to call back during the day tomorrow.
When I called the phone number on the check at 9 a.m. CDT today, a foreign sounding man answered. I asked him to verify the address of where he was located, but he said he "didnt know me and could not give me any information. Just call the agent listed in the letter." I then asked him what time it was where he is and he replied, "A little after 10 a.m." That would put him on the East coast, not California.
My friend at work googled "Stubhub Financial Services" and we saw the scam reports. Needless to say, I will NOT be cashing this check.
I want to see them prosecuted for fraud using the U.S. Postal system, and what ever else we can get them for!! They need to be stopped!
