I found the product via clicking on a Facebook Ad - one of those home-made looking videos showing extraordinary wringkle repair results.
It was a Free Sample offer. As soon as I applied for the free sample I found out that I would need to pay $4.99 for shipping. No biggie.
I decided to give it a try. I was on alert to see if there might be any mention of an ongoing subscription commitment attached to it. I was looking diligently for any sign of one.
I was required to put in my personal information, address, etc. plus credit card information right up front. At no time did I see any mention of a subscription, agreement, etc. There was no way that I could have missed one, either. Like I said, I was diligently looking for something like that.
After entering my information, I was then offered another product purchase opportunity. I began to hesitate. It just didn't feel right. I changed my mind and decided not to complete the order. Again, at this point there had been no mention of a subscription or agreement of any kind. I tried to back out of the system but there was no way to do that. I finally had to shut down the computer connection to their site. Note: I never completed the order and certainly never agreed to any subscription trial. I definitely didn't check any box agreeing to any trial as they later said I must have done.
Nevertheless, I soon received an email with a receipt saying I had been charged for the shipping. I emailed them back and disputed it. That's when I found out that they had not only gone ahead and charged my credit card for the shipping, but they had enrolled me in a subscription trial program and were prepared to start billing me 13 days later at a MUCH higher price if I didn't cancel the subscription before the 13 days were up.
This upcoming subscription charge was not mentioned anywhere on the shipping receipt they sent either. If I hadn't disputed the shipping charge, I would never have known I was about to be charged a substantial subscription fee and have forfeited my opportunity to cancel before being charged. Thank goodness I disputed and avoided a nearly $70 charge for something I had never even seen before!
And to think my initial thought was, "oh, well, it's only $5," Fortunately, it just didn't feel right.
In further email communications, they tried to tell me that I must have checked a box agreeing to their subscription terms. Otherwise the order could not have been processed. All I can say is that is not true. I may have verified/agreed to the information I entered for the shipping charges, but nothing that indicated to me that I was finalizing the order. And how could I have finalized it? There had yet to be any mention whatsoever of a trial subscription attached to it.
I find this very disturbing.
After several emails going back and forth, they say they have now cancelled my order and are refunding my money, removed my credit card information from their files (upon my request), and will not charge me any subscription fees. It is too soon to tell whether the refund will show up or whether they will charge me or not for the subscription. Given my tenacity in the matter, they very well might be on their best behavior, choosing easier prey to go after.
I am less concerned about my $5 as I am about the fact that in their emails they are lying about the purchase and checkout process. They are indeed charging people before they have their final approval, signing them up for subscription services without authorization or warning as to the additional subscription charges coming their way, and without any notification that they have 13 days to cancel before they will be charged.
I don't believe these are oversights on their part. When I was on the site and went through the process, these "issues" felt intentional. My intuition kicked in early on, but unfortunately, it kicked in after I had already entered my information. Too late. Once entered, they've trapped you.
