New Years Day, the sales are on!

My wife and I stopped by Target in Bluffton, SC. Many items were on sale and we were looking for a few that we needed. First stop, pants for my daughter, price tagged at $19.99. The sign said $15.00, we picked up several pair. Next stop was a purse for my wife. We found one that was suitable on a rack that said $19.95. When we checked out the pants were fine ($15.00), the purse however rang up at $32.50. We called for a manager to help us out. The manager, a small man named Howard, not far away, but talking with a collection of women, chose to ignore us for several minutes.

Finally grasping the reason for our request, he walked down to the isle where the purses were. Standing at the endo of the isle, too lazy to actually walk up and speak with us, he started making some kind of gestures unrecognizable to either the cashier or us. I had to walk to him to find out what he wasdoing. I pointed to the rack where there were six (no kidding, really six) signs that said $19.95. "That's where we got it from" I said. Howard said the one you have is $32.50. "Ok, sell me this one" (grabbing another from the same rack). "That one is $32.50 too" he said. I explained that if they were in fact on the sale rack that they must be on sale and sell for what the rack says. "I don't care, they are $325.0" said Howard. We took our pants and left.

Target is normally a fine place to shop, good prices, good quality, however no store is better than the people they hire to represent them. My background is law enforcement. In law enforcement we have something called "little mans disease". Someone of small stature gains authority and abuses it, thinking somehow that makes them big, they don't last long. Perhaps that is Howards problem, I don't know. Once again, a store is only as good as the people that represent it. If Howard is the best they have I would recommend the Target store in Bluffton, South Carolina be avoided.

Dishonest and illegal advertising of products and a manager that stands behind such misleading criminal acts should not be tolerated. YOU ARE THE VICTIM! Shop at honest stores with honest management.

Response to rebuttal

Yep, the rebuttal pretty well demonstrates the attitude of the manager that night.

It's unfortunate that we have to deal with people like this in the marketplace. We are lucky to have so many other stores in the area where we are much better treated and the staff is so much more professional.

You are wrong in so many ways

The manager was busy when you needed him and couldn't drop everything he was doing and rush right over to you? Wow, what kind of a manager has other duties besides just attending to you? You don't know what he was talking to those women about. He could have been conducting business. You know, since he is the manager of a business.

"I explained that if they were in fact on the sale rack that they must be on sale and sell for what the rack says". Nope. Wrong again. If that were true I would grab 4 HDTV's and put them by a tag that said $1.99 and have my friend grab them. Wouldn't they have to sell them for that price, Mr Legal Expert? I remember a couple of years ago when a certain big store advertised big screen TV's for 1.99 on their website. Do you know how many they actually sold for $1.99? Zero, they cancelled every single order and it was perfectly legal. Looks like you don't have any idea what you're talking about.

The fact is that it would be nice if stores had someone to follow EVERY customer around and make sure they don't put anything where it doesn't belong, but that's not realistic. Even if it was a pricing error, stores are legally allowed to make pricing errors. Despite your vast legal knowledge, the store isn't obligated to sell you that purse at that price. If you are going to argue that fact, then you better be ready to cite the specific law you are talking about as I'm sure it doesn't exist.

You let your complaint get way too personal with the manager. He was doing his job and you are acting like a scorned lover with your comments. I understand your frustration with the store and the manager, but his decision was business. You're making it personal. You need to grow up sir.

As for the store itself, make sure every store you go to doesn't make the same mistake. Google search pricing errors for the other big stores and see what you find. Since this upsets you so much, I recommend you stay home and let someone who is more grown up do the shopping.
